On the 7th of May 2003, at 22.05 Hrs., Mr. Ponniah Manikavasagam Senior journalist residing at 7/3 10thLane Vairavapuliyankulam, Vavuniya, received a death threat through a telephone Call.
According to the CLI (Caller Line Identification) unit connected to his telephone, the call originated from the Number 023-32822 and we learnt that this Telephone belonged to the Office of EPRLF (Varather Group).

We vehemently condemn the action taken against our fellow journalist, and we will appreciate your taking suitable action to safeguard the life of Mr. Manikavasagam and those of other journalist and protect the rights of the media.

Dear Sir,

Harassment to Mr. R. Thurairatnam, the President of SLTMA.

Reference to the telephone conversation, I had with you last evening pertaining to the harassment caused to our President, Mr. R. Thurairatnam, on Thursday, the 5th June,around 8.30 p.m. when he was returning to his resident from Batticaloa Town. The Police Officers attached to the Veechchukalmunai Police Post, purposely obstructed our President at Vipulananda Road and questioning him for more than 45 minutes without any reasons. And the Police Officers who were on duty didnâ€™t give any respect even to the Media Identity Card, issued by the Govt. Information Department.

We feel that this type of harassments is violating the freedom of expression and we also feel that this was a type of threatening against the journalists.

Hence we earnestly request you to look into this matter immediately and take appropriate action.
