[face=Arial]Govt. agrees to grant tiger naval exercisesIt is reported that the government, through Norway representatives, has agreed to allow the sea tigers to use live ammunition in naval exercises and demarcate a separate sea zone to the LTTE.
Mr. Tilak Marapane, Minister of Defense has informed the President at the emergency meeting of the Security Council meeting held on Tuesday that a letter to this effect had been sent by the government.
The Prime Minister who had met the President that morning too had requested the President to grant permission for the LTTE to engage in naval exercises in the North Sea.
However the President has expressed her opposition to this and had indicated that allowing the LTTE to engage in naval exercises would be recognizing them as a de facto naval force and this would be a threat to the sovereignty of the country.
At the Security Council meeting held in the afternoon Mr. Marapane had said allowing the tigers to engage in naval exercises using live ammunition won’t give them any recognition and had said there is no other solution to the present crisis.The President has declined the request.[/face]
