'Bagle' e-mail worm spreading fast Tuesday, January 20, 2004 Posted: 9:12 AM EST (1412 GMT) NEW YORK (AP) -- A new Internet virus was spreading fast throughout Asia, Australia and Europe but computer security experts were divided on the seriousness of the threat from the "Bagle" worm. Experts expected some impact in the United States when people returned to work Tuesday after a holiday weekend. The "Bagle" or "Beagle" worm arrives in an e-mail with the subject "hi" and the word "test" in the message body. If the accompanying attachment is executed, the worm is unleashed and tries to send itself to all e-mails listed in the user's address book. Sometimes the attachment is designed to look like a Microsoft calculator, said David Perry, spokesman for antivirus software firm Trend Micro Inc. The virus only affects machines running Microsoft Windows operating systems. "It's clumsy," Perry said from Lake Forest, California, adding that most people knew better than to click on an attached calculator: "I don't get e-mails with calculators in it, do you?" The worm started spreading on Monday and most corporations have already protected themselves against it, Perry said. Carey Nachenberg, chief architect of Symantec Research Labs in Cupertino, California, said home users, not corporations, were most at risk because companies had protected themselves quickly. "We could see this fizzle out in several days," Nachenberg said. "Or we could also see a lot of people infected" if they don't update their antivirus software.

Threat from new Internet worm eases
Mass mailing worm Bagle, which surfaced four days ago, seems to have peaked, with Australia and China being hit hard IT MIGHT sound like a sweet bread roll, but the first mass mailing worm this year, known as Bagle, has spread to hundreds of thousands of computers since it was discovered four days ago. An anti-virus company, MessageLabs, said it has stopped 114,000 copies of the worm, which is also known as Beagle, so far. It seems to have come from Germany, and countries particularly hard hit are Australia and China. But the good news is that the worm seems to already have peaked. Security company Networks Associates, which has the McAfee brand of anti-virus software, had an almost 40 per cent fall in the number of reports received from its customers. Other security firms The Straits Times spoke to yesterday were upbeat that the Bagle problem has largely been licked. Mr Ross Wilson, senior regional director of Symantec, said it got about 500 calls from clients worldwide and about 60 reports of infection in the Asia Pacific. Despite the apparent reduction of the threat from the worm, Bagle has sparked fears that it may be the harbinger of more bad news. Experts are predicting that Bagle is just the first of a series of programs or viruses that will become increasingly more effective at attacking PCs with each new version. This is based on a comparison of Bagle with last year's most effective virus, Sobig. Bagle's blueprint is very similar to Sobig's code: Both are mass mailing worms. This means that it reaches your inbox with a fairly innocuous message, like 'Hi', and once opened, will send a flood of copies to all your contacts. Like Sobig, Bagle uses its own e-mail program to send messages quickly, rather than use the e-mail functions built into Microsoft Outlook, for example. The flood of e-mail messages can slow down Internet connections and even bring down systems. And like Sobig, Bagle has an expiry date, which has persuaded some experts to predict there will be more robust versions of the worm slated for release soon. It was the sixth version of Sobig that brought computer users to their knees in August last year. Previous versions had expiry dates. Bagle is set to die next Wednesday. However, while Bagle does not appear to damage computers, experts are concerned that it may install a program on the computers of those who open the attachment. 'It seems perfectly possible that Bagle is yet another worm written by spammers,' said Mr Mikko Hypponen of the Finnish-based security firm F-Secure. 'This way, they could first infect a large amount of computers. When they have enough, they could automatically install invisible e-mail proxy servers on each machine and start spamming through them.' -- AFP, NYT |
