Media Report - Humanitarian Disaster in NE Sri Lanka
[ Editor-TamilOosai ][ 28.12.2004]
Dear Sir/Madam
RE: Humanitarian Disaster in Sri Lanka
As you are all already aware there are more than 13000 people have been killed in Sri Lanka as of 27th December (20:43 GMT) alone and this figure is expected to rise.
While the international media reports the numbers it focuses on the plight of Tourists and the dead in the South alone. However the largest proportion of this 13000 people dead is from North and East alone. Whole beaches are strewn with debris and waste. Whole villages have been turned into graveyards.
While the media and Sri Lankan government focuses on the tourist areas of the south, hundreds of thousands of people in the North and East of Sri Lanka are without clean water, urgent medicines, food, clothing and toilet facilities. It is feared that lack of these immediate requirements can give way to outbreak of epidemics as the dead bodies lie in open fields and waterways.
I urge you to help these people who are the most affected but whose plight is not known to the outside world.
Yours sincerely
