ஏன் அவ சாபம் போட்டவ எண்டு ரத்வத்தை சொல்லவேயில்லை. வசதிப்படாத விடயங்களை சொல்ல மாட்டினம் தானே.

The Curse of Kuveni

It is said that when Vijaya, the rogue prince from Kerala, reneged on his promise to Kuveni the indigenous princess from The Island off the tip of South India that he and his bunch of thugs ended up in after banishment from his home state, KUVENI cursed him and his decedents, and her curse was that decedents of Vijaya would never be able to live in peace and prosperity in this Island.

 

It started with the Chola invasions that systematically destroyed the original settlers, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British joined in and robbed the Country of its wealth. Although some of what the British left behind would have come in handy today (like a strong civil service and a Police force), we turned on ourselves with badly thought out political theories (Sinhala Only, austerity and even uncontrolled liberalization) that played to the gallery. And of course, the JVP, the LTTE and now the Jihad have completed the ultimate decimation of this 2500 plus years old history.

 

Yes, let’s face it we have failed and are now unable to govern ourselves! Even in this situation most of the so-called "LEADERS" are interested in is the blame game. Others even go to the extent of announcing their candidacy for Presidency in the next election! A country similar to ours, New Zealand, also with a heavy dependence on tourism, had a similar situation recently and what happened? The politicians formed a united front and set an example to the populace, and did a fantastic job in trying to ensure normalcy, an example that gained world recognition.

 

We need a Police force that can instil respect for the law in the general populace, civic responsibility, back to our sense of values and acceptance of decent behaviour, simple things like paying your bills on time and not accepting commissions and back payments for simply carrying out your job or your duty, sticking to speed limits and the highway code. If this is done the cream will rise again to the top, i.e. those with the aforementioned values will be recognised again by the society, who scoff at them at present, and may have an interest in getting involved in governing our country.

 

We also need a Civil Service that is manned by qualified people who know the relevant subject, and have the confidence and character to carry out their duties, not catchers and political appointees who are more than incompetent! A competent Civil Service will ensure that even if idiot politicians do get into office, they will not be able to carry out these nonsensical, stupid schemes and skulduggery.

 

The current situation is due to a denigration of values and standards fuelled by greed, lack of social responsibility, and above all irresponsible and incompetent leadership.

 

Lest I be accused of being like the JVP and simply highlighting problems and not providing solutions…I have a solution! Hand the Police force and the Civil Service over to the British or the Americans to revamp. Pay them with the loot that should be recovered from former politicians that have robbed this country blind. Furthermore, the people may listen to what a Suddha has to say!
