Pfizer aims for 10-20 mln doses of coronavirus vaccine by end-2020 depending on trials

ZURICH/GENEVA, April 30 (Reuters) - Pfizer aims to make 10-20 million doses of a coronavirus vaccine it is developing with Germany's BioNtech by the end of 2020 for possible emergency use depending on trial results, the U.S. drugmaker's vaccines head said on Thursday.

"Of course we need to see and wait to see how the vaccine's efficacy and safety is demonstrated, hopefully in the coming months," Nanette Cocero, the global head of Pfizer Vaccines, said on a conference call. "But assuming that is demonstrated, we are looking to ramp up manufacturing rather quickly to have around 10 to 20 mln doses by the end of this year, which are expected to then of course be used in an emergency type of setting." FDA issues emergency-use authorization for remdesivir to treat hospitalized patients with severe Covid-19

The experimental drug remdesivir has been approved to treat hospitalized patients with severe Covid-19, the US Food and Drug Administration said in a letter on Friday.

Remdesivir is the first authorized therapy drug for Covid-19 in the United States, FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said on Friday.

"This is an important clinical advance that showed a statistically significant reduction in time to recovery for patients with Covid-19 and is the first authorized therapy for Covid-19." Hahn said.

The FDA issued an emergency-use authorization on Friday, saying the benefits of the drug outweigh its risks in patients. An emergency-use authorization is a lower regulatory bar than full FDA approval.
Denise Hinton, the FDA's chief scientist, said in the authorization letter that there is "no adequate, approved, and available alternative to the emergency use of remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19."

France, Italy and Spain have registered the lowest daily death tolls for weeks as they prepare to ease restrictions.

France reported 135 deaths; Spain's 164 were the lowest since mid-March; and Italy's 174 was a two-month low.

Meanwhile French doctor has claimed new tests on samples from patients show the virus was present in the country last year - weeks before the first officially recorded case.

Pfizer begins human testing for experimental coronavirus vaccine in the US

  • Pfizer has begun testing an experimental vaccine to combat the coronavirus in the United States, the pharmaceutical giant announced Tuesday.
  • The U.S.-based company, which is working alongside German drugmaker BioNTech, said the first human participants in the United States have been dosed with the potential vaccine, BNT162.

The experimental vaccine contains genetic material called messenger RNA, or mRNA. The mRNA is a genetic code that tells cells what to build -- in this case, an antigen that may induce an immune response for the virus.

Heathrow, Britain’s biggest airport, is testing out coronavirus-beating tech to get the world flying again

Britain’s biggest airport, Heathrow, said on Wednesday it will start testing technology to control the spread of coronavirus in airports and get the world flying again.

Tested technology will see security trays cleaned with ultraviolet light, heat screening to detect those infected, and contact-free security checks — reducing the risk of passing on the virus with a pat down.

It said the technology will help establish an international standard for virus-beating airport tech.

“This standard is key to minimizing transmission of COVID-19 across borders, and the technology we are trialing at Heathrow could be part of the solution,” said Heathrow Chief Executive John Holland-Kaye.

People who recover from COVID-19 but test positive for the virus again days or weeks later are not shedding viral particles and are not infectious, according to data released Tuesday by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The so-called “re-positive” cases have raised fears that an infection with the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, could “reactivate” in recovered patients or that recovering from the infection may fail to produce even short-lived immunity, allowing patients to immediately become re-infected if they are exposed.

The new data from Korea should ease those concerns.

KCDC researchers examined 285 cases that had previously recovered from COVID-19 but then tested positive again. The patients tested positive again anywhere from one to 37 days after recovering from their first infection and being discharged from isolation. The average time to a second positive was about 14 days.

Of those cases, researchers checked for symptoms in 284 of them. They found that 126 (about 48 percent) did indeed have symptoms related to COVID-19.

But none of them seemed to have spread the infection. KCDC investigated 790 people who had close contact with the 285 cases and found that none of them had been infected by the “re-positive” cases.
