May 18, 2020 marks the eleventh year since the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. Tamil Canadians and Tamils across the world remember all those who were killed during the war and honor the eleventh anniversary of #Mullivaikal. The City of Brampton and all Canadians stand with you.

On this anniversary, we remember all the lives that were lost during three decades of war, including the final stage leading to May 2009 in Mullivaikal, where it was declared a Genocide of the Tamil people.

Patrick Brown, the Mayor of Brampton has stood alongside many Canadian Tamils in their efforts to bring justice to the Tamils in Sri Lanka. Since 2009, Patrick has strongly advocated for the Tamils and voiced his concerns over the numerous human rights violations demonstrated by the Sri Lankan government.

Today we pay tribute to the hundreds of thousands of Tamils who’ve lost their lives during the genocide and stand with the many Tamils around the world who are honouring the loss of their loved ones.

Conservative leadership candidate Peter Mackay calls for accountability and justice for victims of the Tamil Genocide in Mullivaikal,Sri Lanka.

"Today the Canadian Tamil community and Tamils around the world are remembering the Mullivaikal genocide in Sri Lanka. Although times are challenging due to COVID-19 and the measures that entails Tamils have shown incredible resilience in remembering the innocent civilians, the victims and ensuring that there is a demand for justice.

In 2009 the Tamils in Sri Lanka were subjected to a genocide at the hands of the Sri Lankan government and despite 11 years passing. Tamils around the world and in Sri Lanka are left with no answer for the hundred thousands of lives that were lost. Thousands of people have been displaced and have missing for over a decade now. Over the years Sri Lanka has shown no efforts in providing accountability and justice for the human rights abuses against Tamils.

As Canadians we put forth important principles of justice, equality, and peace and the rule of law. I stand by behind the Tamil Canadian community in seeking justice for those who were killed at the hands of the Sri Lankan government and for those who have been subjected to genocidal acts. I want to offer my support to Canadian Tamils and the Tamil community everywhere during this solemn time of remembrance. I will continue to call for accountability for the Sri Lankan government for the human rights abuses that took place in Mullivaikal."

Statement by Gary Anandasangaree, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Rouge Park on Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, May 18, 2020

Today, Tamils across the globe mark Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, the fateful day in 2009 when the world stood silent to see the slaughter of Tamils in the hands of the Sri Lankan armed forces, killing over 70,000 people, and displacing over 300,000 civilians. Today, and every day, we remember the lives lost, the children and spouses who disappeared, and those unjustly imprisoned. Eleven years later, many questions remain unanswered. The search for truth, justice and accountability continues today.

Just before COVID-19 hit the world and interrupted our daily lives, Sri Lanka was reverting back to authoritarian rule. At the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Sri Lanka repudiated its support of UNHRC 30/1, and 40/1, thereby derailing the only real and constructive process that existed within our International World Order. The Rajapaksa brothers took office in October 2019 and were set to win an overwhelming majority in the parliamentary elections set for this Spring. By all accounts, space for civil society was shrinking, prisoners continued to languish in prisons under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act., families of the disappeared continued to search desperately for their loved ones, and the Tamil people, on and off the island, were losing hope.

While we usually mark this day with mass gatherings, and collective action, our commemoration this year will be more sombre and introspective due to threats of COVID-19. For Tamil-Canadians who lived through the 26-year armed conflict, the past nine weeks under COVID-19 isolation has been a constant reminder of the adversity we have overcome. Our resilience over the decades has prepared us to overcome and build our community in a post-COVID era.

For Tamils around the world, this new era should be one in which we continue our resolve to hold those who are responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed in the last phase of the armed conflict to account. This can be accomplished by using existing international legal frameworks, including the International Criminal Court, International Court of Justice, and through individual states exercising Universal Jurisdiction to ensure that accountability is established. Concurrently, the Tamil diaspora around the world should continue to work with their respective governments to take additional measures. The work of the community in the United States in imposing a travel ban against Shavendra Silva is a great example of this strategy. In this regard, I will continue to work with our Canadian government, Tamil-Canadian community, and human rights advocates, to advance accountability, justice, and human rights on the island of Sri Lanka.

Finally, I want to take a moment to thank all the front-line workers, including Tamil- Canadians, who through their hard work and dedication keep us safe by their heroic work at hospitals, restaurants, coffee shops, through deliveries and in grocery stores. Let us collectively continue on a path towards accountability, justice and peace. It is a vital step for people of Sri Lanka to begin rebuilding all that was and continues to be lost.

Statement by the Prime Minister on the 11th anniversary of the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka

May 18, 2020
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement today on the anniversary of the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka:

“As we mark the 11th anniversary of the end of armed conflict in Sri Lanka, my thoughts are with the victims, their families and loved ones. This is a time to reflect on the 26 years of conflict, including the last phase of the war in Mullivaikal, and the lives that were lost, and to remember those who were injured, went missing, or were displaced from their homes and communities.

“Over the past 11 years, I have met with many Canadians, who were personally affected by this war. Their stories of incalculable loss, tremendous adversity, and continued resilience are a solemn reminder of the need to continue working toward lasting peace and reconciliation.

“Learning from the past is crucial to building for the future. I reiterate the call for Sri Lanka to pursue a meaningful accountability process. Canada continues to offer its support to the Sri Lankan government and all those working toward justice, reconciliation and inclusion, all of which underpin long-term peace and prosperity in the country.”

“Canada is made stronger by its diversity, and the many cultures and heritages that that call this country home.”

Commemoration of the Mullivaikal Massacre

Today, May 18th is the 11th anniversary of the Mullivaikal Massacre. Part of the Genocide that targeted the Tamil Community in Sri Lanka and resulted in the deaths of 160,000 innocent, unarmed men, women and children. Many were murdered because of their culture, faith, language and traditions.

The Sri Lankan Government must acknowledge and accept responsibility for this Genocide. The international community must deliver justice to the families of the victims.

Although we cannot commemorate this genocide in person I would like to thank the Australian Tamil Congress for their unwavering fight to bring justice to the victims and their families so to ensure that this genocide will never be forgotten. I stand with you and remember.

Subject : Justice and permanenet political solution for Tamils

Hello Garnett,
I have seen your tireless efforts and justice. First time writing.
Thanks so much for speaking on the 11th anniversary of Tamil genocide.

Please do all the efforts to stop future genocides and bring peace, equality and justice to victims in Sri Lanka. You also talked about resolutions by all parties against Sri Lanka. And others talked about bringing similar bans like US done.

We need action. We need justice. We need political solution.

Keep safe!
Thanks,
