How to talk to kids about death

Last year was a difficult one in terms of death and grief for my family.

We had three people close to us pass away against the backdrop of ever-rising COVID numbers and deaths broadcast by the media.

While my husband and I were equipped to manage it, my children, who were only six and seven at the time, were not.

Death was a relatively new concept to them and something they hadn't had to deal with firsthand.

At the time I thought I had done my best to discuss the subject with them, but as time went on, I worried I might be either scaring them or not giving them enough information, or both.

So how do you talk to your kids about death, and importantly how do you do it without terrifying them?

Is there a right time to talk to your kids about death?

Child psychologist Andrew Greenfield says that being 'ready' to take in information about death "is not about the age necessarily, it is more dependent on your child's maturity, communication ability and cognitive development".

You could have a younger child more ready than an older sibling, depending on these factors, so gauging each child's readiness individually so you don't overwhelm them is important.

Child psychologist Eliza Vassallo from Morningside, Queensland believes that talking to children about death should be an "organic and evolving process in a child's development".

And when someone they know dies, we can support them by being open with our listening and talking.

"If a child has experienced the loss of a loved one, we need to be prepared to explain and nurture them through their understanding of death and dying and grief and loss."

How do you do have the talk without terrifying kids?

Using examples can help

"Helping children to understand basic life cycles is an activity we can do with children from an early age," says Ms Vassallo.

"For example, learning about the lifecycles of insects, seasons of changes throughout the year, changes in the colour of leaves on trees.

"We can definitely find child appropriate opportunities around us in nature, which help us to gently explain and demonstrate change and death and dying to children.

"Other useful examples can present these opportunities to us through movies, TV shows and children's books."

The picture book The Invisible String by Patrice Karst was a great resource for me in explaining death to my youngest daughter. And a Netflix show, Alexa and Katie, also helped my eldest daughter's understanding of cancer and how some people will die from it and some will get better.

Keep it simple but honest

Mr Greenfield says keeping the conversation simple but honest is best.

"Explain generally the concept and situation. I wouldn't necessarily go into too much detail about it, so you don't scare them but at the same time being realistic about the facts is important."

He also explains that based upon your own cultural, spiritual and religious beliefs, "what happens when you die can be different which can impact on how you talk to your child about it" and shape your conversation.

Ms Vassallo believes that truthfulness and clarity is key.

"The rule of thumb is always to be honest and respectful of the child, ensuring that we speak honestly and in language that is easily understood by [them]."

Keeping language simple and using concrete terms is also very important to ensure the child understands the finality of death.

"Terms like 'passed away', 'gone to sleep', or 'lost' should always be avoided as this can lead to a lot of confusion and even fear for children, who may then start to question their own mortality and that of those around them," she says.

A sample script offered by Ms Vassallo, based on the common question 'What happens when someone dies?':

When someone dies, it means that their body shuts down. Their heart stops working, their body stops moving, and they stop breathing. When someone dies, they can no longer feel any pain, they can no longer see, hear, smell or move.

Tips for speaking to kids about death

Do:

  • Allow children the opportunities to see other people around them, express their grief. Children will be watching those adults around them for cues about the appropriateness in expressing and regulating their emotions.
  • Allow time for grieving — there is no time limit for the expression of grief.
  • Create and keep routines.
  • Encourage children to share their thoughts and feelings through play and communication.

Don't:

  • Dismiss emotional responses.
  • Exclude children from rituals surrounding death, like funerals.
  • Pretend death hasn't happened or isn't real by ignoring it.

    • In the aftermath of the highly contested 2000 Presidential election, Congress funded three billion dollars for states to replace voting machines that in some cases had been in use for fifty years. Old machines were replaced with machines designed with the latest technology. Despite efforts to make voting fair and transparent, some claim that these new machines are vulnerable to both software glitches and hackers and provide no paper trail for how voters cast their ballots. https://ny.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/ntk11.socst.civ.polsys.elec.ballotbox/ballot-boxing-the-problem-with-electronic-voting-machines/
