A soldier of India's elite Assam Rifles stands guard at the India Gate, New Delhi.Paramilitary designates forces whose function and organization are similar to those of a professional military force, but which are not regarded as having the same status.[1] The term uses the Greek/Latin prefix para- ("beside"), also seen in words such as paramedic.

The term paramilitary is subjective, depending on what is considered similar to a military force, and what status a force is considered to have. The nature of paramilitary forces therefore varies greatly according to the speaker and the context. For instance, in Northern Ireland, paramilitary refers to any illegally armed group with a political purpose, but in Colombia, paramilitary refers specifically to illegally armed groups which are considered right-wing (e.g. AUC), while illegally armed groups considered left-wing, such as FARC, are referred to as guerrillas.[citation needed]

Depending on context, paramilitaries can include:

Armed Forces outside the Military, e.g. gendarmeries and forces such as the Indian Paramilitary Forces and People's Armed Police and Pakistans Frontier Corps and Pakistan Rangers. The reason that these units are outside of the military can be for several reason, they may have roles different from the military, offer a special service, for example Pakistans Northern Light Infantry (now a part of the army) was able to fight at 20,000 feet plus altitudes.

Some units of National Intelligence Services that are composed of civilian agents tasked with covert action in areas that are difficult or sometimes illegal for Military Forces to operate, such as the Special Activities Division of the US Central Intelligence Agency.

Some Internal Security, Border Protection and Law Enforcement organizations that are not considered part of the regular Military but are similar in training, equipment and/or organization, such the Internal Troops of the Russian Interior Ministry (MVD), or the Egyptian Central Security Forces. There is some overlap between these and the first example mentioned, and indeed that is often one of the reasons why these may be administratively separate from the military, especially in countries where the military is forbidden or restricted in law enforcement.

Illegal forces which consider themselves military but which governments consider terrorist, e.g. Provisional IRA, Ulster Volunteer Force, AUC, guerrillas.

Private armies and militias.

Militarized preexisting government agencies, such as SWAT teams.[2]

Auxiliary services of regular armed forces, such as the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the adult portion of the Civil Air Patrol.

Youth groups and movements that can be considered 'militarized' to various degrees, the Hitler Youth movement being perhaps the most notorious example. Modern examples include military cadet movements like the British Army Cadet Force Royal Canadian Air Cadets, the American Civil Air Patrol and the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps and India's National Cadet Corps.

Indian Paramilitary Forces are those agencies of the Ministry of Defence or the Ministry of Home Affairs which act as armed forces auxiliaries and are considered part of the Indian Armed Forces.

There are a large number of such paramilitary forces with a wide range of roles. The different forces tend to share a broadly gendarmerie role and generally perform counter-insurgency or anti-terrorist missions.

The Indian Paramilitary Forces (PMF) are regarded as the world's second largest (Second only to the Chinese People's Armed Police with 1.5 million personnel) and most formidable paramilitary force. In 2002, the total strength of the paramilitary force stood at 1.3 million personnel.

The Provincial Armed Constabulary (Pradeshik) - 250 to 300,000 persons who act as a mobile armed reserve maintained at key locations in some states and actived only on the orders from the deputy inspector general or higher-level. Armed constabulary are usually not in contact with the public until they are assigned to VIP duty or assigned to maintain order during fairs, festivals, athletic events, elections, and natural disasters. They may also be sent to quell outbreaks of student or labor unrest, organized crime, and communal riots; to maintain key guard posts; and to participate in antiterrorist operations. Depending on the type of assignment, the Provincial Armed Constabulary may carry only lathis or they may be equipped with infantry weapons.
