Mohammad Idrees, who lives around 400 meters from the house, said local residents were woken in the night by the sound of a big explosion.

"We rushed to the rooftop and saw flames near that house. We also heard some gunshots," Idrees said. "Soon after the blast, we saw military vehicles rushing to the site of the blast."

Another resident, Nasir Khan, said that commandos had encircled the compound as three helicopters hovered overhead.

"All of a sudden there was firing towards the helicopters from the ground," said Khan, who had watched the drama unfold from his rooftop. "There was intense firing and then I saw one of the helicopters crash."

US officials say Osama bin Laden's swift burial complies with Islamic custom, although burial at sea is uncommon for Muslims

The dilemma of what to do with Osama bin Laden's body appears to have been quickly resolved if reports that he has been buried at sea prove correct.

Burying him on land could have led to his grave becoming a centre of contention as well as raising questions about where he should be buried.

"Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult," a US official said, adding: "So the US decided to bury him at sea."

Fears about Bin Laden's burial place turning into a shrine for Islamists were probably unfounded, since the Wahhabi/Salafi tradition rejects such things. Even Saudi kings are buried in unmarked graves.

Senior US officials initially told news agencies that his body would be disposed of in accordance with Islamic tradition, which involves ritual washing, shrouding and burial within 24 hours.

Although the swift burial complies with Islamic custom and should therefore avoid causing any offence in Muslim countries, the apparent haste could lead to claims that the person killed was not really Bin Laden – though the US authorities have taken DNA samples and appear to have no doubts.

The 24-hour rule has not always been applied by the US in the past. For example, the bodies of Uday and Qusay Hussein – sons of the Iraqi dictator – were held for 11 days before being released for burial.

Burial at sea is rare in Islam, though several Muslim websites say it is permitted in certain circumstances.

One is on a long voyage where the body may decay before the ship reaches land. The other is if there is a risk of enemies digging up a land grave and exhuming or mutilating the body – a rule that could plausibly be applied in Bin Laden's case.

For sea burial, according to alislam.org, the body should be lowered into the water "in a vessel of clay or with a weight tied to its feet". The website adds: "As far as possible it should not be lowered at a point where it is eaten up immediately by the sea predators."

RAMALLAH/GAZA - Hamas on Monday deplored the killing of Osama bin Laden by US forces, while its prospective power-sharing partner, the Palestinian Authority, issued a statement welcoming the al Qaida-leader's death.

Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas in the Gaza Strip, called bin Laden a martyr.

"Getting rid of bin Laden is good for the cause of peace worldwide but what counts is to overcome the discourse and the methods -- the violent methods -- that were created and encouraged by bin Laden and others in the world," Palestinian Authority spokesman Ghassan Khatib said.

Hamas is due to sign a unity deal this week in Cairo with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's more secular Fatah movement.

Israel has condemned the agreement, saying it could sabotage any efforts to revive peace talks with the Palestinians. The deal envisages an interim unity government comprised of independents and Palestinian elections later in the year.

The Fatah-led PA supports a negotiated peace with Israel to obtain a state in territories the Jewish state captured in a 1967 war. Hamas is officially sworn to Israel's destruction.

Abbas has defended reconciliation with Hamas, saying it reflected a deep-seated Palestinian desire to close a rift with the group that seized Gaza from Fatah forces in 2007.

The United States has responded coolly to the unity pact.

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, the PA's view on the death of the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks was shared by Ahmed Saleh, a 58-year-old retiree.

"The world is better without bin Laden. This has removed a pillar of evil from the world," he said. "His heinous actions were exploited to allow hostile policies towards the Arabs and Muslims."

But Umm Mohammed, a veiled woman, said she hoped news of bin Laden's death was a lie. "God willing, he will continue to conquer the West," she said.

Palestinians hit the headlines after the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, carried out by al Qaeda, when a small group were filmed celebrating in East Jerusalem.

At the time, there were bigger demonstrations in the Gaza Strip in support of the attacks. Palestinians partly blame their national plight on generations of U.S. support for Israel.

But late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat banned such public displays and voiced sympathy for the dead in the United States.

In Gaza, Hamas now faces a challenge from al Qaida-inspired groups that consider it to be too moderate. One such group was behind last month's killing of a pro-Palestinian Italian activist in the territory.

Abdel-Qader Abu Shaaban, a 53-year-old Palestinian from Gaza, described bin Laden's killing as "a very criminal act".

"This is not a victory. If they assassinated bin Laden, there will be others stronger than him: politicians and military people," he said.

இஸ்லாமிய முறைப்படி 24மணி நேரத்தில் உடல் தகனம் செய்யப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதால் பின்லேடனின் உடல் இஸ்லாமிய முறைப்படி கையாளப்பட்டு கடலில் புதைக்கப்பட்டு விட்டதாக அமெரிக்கா அறிவித்துள்ளது.

நள்ளிரவுக்குப் பின்னர் பிலால் நகரில் 3 ஹெலிகாப்டர்கள் இறங்கியதும் இந்த நடவடிக்கை தொடங்கியது என அப்போட்டாபாத் மக்கள் தெரிவித்தனர். முதலில் ஆயுதங்களால் சுடும் சத்தம் கேட்டது. பின்னர் ஒரு ஹெலிகாப்டர் தீப்பிடித்து அருகிலுள்ள பகுதியில் விழுந்தது என இந்த சம்பவத்தை தூரத்தில் இருந்து பார்த்த பாதுகாவலர் குலாம் ரசூல் என்பவர் தெரிவித்தார். 2 விமானங்கள் தலைக்கு மேல் பறந்துசென்றன. அந்த பகுதியை பாகிஸ்தான் படைகள் சுற்றிவளைத்து தேடுதலில் ஈடுபட்டன என அவர் கூறினார்.

U.S. pushes back day of reckoning on debt limit

(Reuters) - The Treasury on Monday pushed back the date when it expects the nation will run out of options for avoiding a default on its obligations by three weeks, buying more time to strike a budget deal with Congress.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said stronger-than-expected spring tax receipts coupled with emergency steps to preserve borrowing capacity will allow the government to continue issuing debt under the $14.3 trillion legal limit until August 2.

Geithner had previously estimated that all room to borrow would be exhausted by July 8. The new estimate provides more breathing room for the Obama administration to negotiate an increase with Republican lawmakers who want to tie the needed legislation to spending cuts.

The Treasury cut its borrowing estimates for the April-June quarter by more than half, to $142 billion, citing higher receipts and lower outlays.

Nonetheless, Geithner said in a letter to congressional leaders that on Friday the Treasury will halt sales of State and Local Government Series securities, known as slugs, to help avoid the debt limit. He said other extraordinary steps to avoid default would follow.

"I caution strongly against delaying action" on debt ceiling legislation, Geithner wrote, reiterating his warning that a default on U.S. debt triggered by a budget policy stalemate would have dire consequences for the economy.

Republicans and some Democrat lawmakers have said they will not raise the debt ceiling without serious reforms to slash trillion-dollar U.S. deficits forecast for the next few years.

Suspending the slugs issuance will allow Treasury to gain more control over its borrowing. The securities are issued to state and local governments on demand as a vehicle for them to invest their municipal bond proceeds.

Treasury has suspended these securities six times in the past two decades. the latest suspension was in September 2007.

A Treasury official said the move would complicate bond issues for state and local governments because they would have to find alternatives to the yield-restricted slugs.

"It's a headache," the official, who requested anonymity, added.

The Treasury reiterated that it expects to reach the debt limit on May 16, after a round of bond and note auctions scheduled for next week. Geithner said he will take steps to access funds in two federal pension programs on that date to buy more borrowing room. The Treasury also may decide to access the seldom-used Exchange Stabilization Fund, a Depression-era account set up to stabilize currencies.

Treasury will announce its quarterly debt refunding plans on Wednesday. Analysts anticipate that Treasury will issue $72 billion worth of three-year, 10-year and 30-year debt in auctions on May 10, 11 and 12.

The Treasury said it expects to borrow $405 billion in the July-September quarter, assuming a debt limit increase.

Shares lose gains that followed Bin Laden's death

Shares in New York have reversed their early gains, which followed US President Barack Obama's announcement that Osama Bin Laden had been killed.

In New York, the Dow Jones closed barely changed on the day.

The benchmark US oil contract earlier fell by more than 2.5% before recovering as investors questioned whether Bin Laden's death would ease political tensions.

செய்திகளின்படி ஒசாமாவின் உடலை எந்தவொரு நாடும் பொறுப்பேற்காது என்பதனால் அது அரபிக்கடலில் வைத்து அமெரிக்காவினால் இஸ்லாத்தின் கோட்பாடுகளிற்கு அமைய மரியாதையுடன் அடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டதாக சொல்லப்படுகின்றது.

இஸ்லாம் முறை படி சடலத்தை தண்ணியில் போடுறது வழமையா? எனக்கு என்னமோ இது உலகத்துக்கு ஆபத்தான விடயாமாகவே தெரிகிறது, இது முஸ்லீம்களின் மனதை புண்படுத்தும் செயலாகவே கருதப்படும். கடும் முஸ்லீம் போக்கு உடையவர்களை இது இன்னமும் கடுமைபடுத்தும்.

ஒபாமா அவர்கள் மீண்டும் அமெரிக்கத் தலைவராக தேர்வு செய்யப்படுவதற்கு ஒசாமா தீர்த்துக்கட்டப்பட்ட விடயம் நிச்சயம் உதவும். அத்துடன், ராஜதந்திரமாக பல்வேறு வகைகளில் அமெரிக்காவிற்கு இது பல அனுகூலங்களை ஏற்படுத்தும். ஆனால்.. இஸ்லாத்தின் பெயரால் நடாத்தப்படும் தீவிரவாத நடவடிக்கைகள் கட்டுப்படுத்தப்படுவதில் இதன் பங்கு என்ன என்பது கேள்விக்குறியது. பல்வேறு ஊடகங்களிலும் கருத்து தெரிவித்தவர்கள் இந்த சந்தேகத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தினார்கள். ஒசாமாவின் மறைவிற்கு பின்னரும் இது தொடர் போராட்டமாகவே அமையப்போகின்றது.

எனக்கு தெரிந்த முஸ்லீம் நண்பர்கள் அநேகம் பேர் ஒருசில உணவுப்பொருட்களைத்தவிர்த்து........நவநாகரீக வாழ்க்கை வாழ்பவர்கள்.

அவர்கள் என்றும் பின்லாடனை உயர்த்தி கதைத்ததேயில்லை. ஆதரவு கொடுப்பவர்களுமில்லை தாங்களும் தங்கள் வாழ்க்கையுமென்று வாழ்பவர்கள்.

ஆனால்....முஸ்லீம் என்ற முறையில் பின்லாடனின் உடல் கடலில் வீசப்பட்டுள்ளது ,புதைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது எனும் செய்தி அவர்களை ஒருகணம் சிந்திக்க வைக்கின்றது போல் தெரிகின்றது.எதிர்வரும் காலங்களில் கொடியவிளைவுகள் பெரிதாக இருக்குமென்றே நான் நினைக்கின்றேன்.

எனக்கு தெரிந்த முஸ்லீம் நண்பர்கள் அநேகம் பேர் ஒருசில உணவுப்பொருட்களைத்தவிர்த்து........நவநாகரீக வாழ்க்கை வாழ்பவர்கள்.

இங்கு இருப்பவர்களால் பிரச்சினை இல்லை, அங்கிருக்கும் அடிப்படை வாதிகளை யோசித்து பாருங்கள்.

அதுபோன்று இந்த விடயத்தில் தமிழர் தரப்பும் எவ்வாறு அரசியல் இலாபம் அடையலாம்?, என்பதை ஆராய்ந்து நாம் செய்ய வேண்டும்.

முக்கியமாக அமெரிக்காவின் இலங்கைக்கான தூதுவருக்கும், பிளேக்கிற்கும் இந்த செய்தி கிட்டவேண்டும்.

- இந்த கொலைக்கு பின்னரான உலக மாற்றங்களை அவதானிக்க வேண்டும். முக்கியமாக " பயங்கரவாதத்திற்கு எதிரான யுத்தத்தில் " என்ன மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்படுகின்றன என.

- அமெரிக்கா உட்பட அதன் தாக்கங்களால் கைதாகி சிறையில் உள்ள தமிழ் உறவுகளை வெளியில் கொண்டுவரலாமா? இல்லை தண்டனை ஏதாவது வகையில் குறைக்கப்படலாமா? என ஆராயப்படல் வேண்டும்.

நீரில் மிதந்து செல்லாதவாறு யாரும் உடலை கைப்பற்றாதவாறு ஆழிகடலில் புதைக்கப்பட்டு விட்டதாக அமெரிக்கா தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

ஓசாமாவின் உடலை எந்த நாடும் பொறுப்பேற்க வரமாட்டாது என்று.......
