1997 : Two rockets fired from a plan flying over Visvamadu, at midnight in to a thickly populated area killing 3 civilians and badly injuring 4 others.

1997 : Eight Sri Lankan soldiers died and many more were injured after a dawn raid by the LTTE on six military checkpoints in the Tamil area of Thanthrimalai (Mannar district). The six military posts, which stretched over a distance of 300 metres, were targeted simultaneously. There were no LTTE casualties and a significant amount of arms and ammunition was captured.

1998 : LTTE forces ambushed a Sinhalese army patrol unit in Valaichchenai (Batticaloa) at 5:40 AM today killing 4 soldiers while the rest fled. The soldiers were patrolling from the Valaichchenai Harbour army camp to Puthukudiyiruppu army camp when the attack happened. A significant quantity of arms and ammunition were captured by the LTTE. There were no LTTE casualties. Meanwhile, last Saturday LTTE forces attacked a group of heavily armed homeguards (armed by the Sri Lankan government) in Sammanthurai (Amparai) at 9:30 PM, killing one. Also in Amparai, LTTE forces Wednesday ambushed paramilitary Sinhalese police in Thirukovil at 8:40 AM killing one.

1997 'March for medicine' - protest rally in Vanni

Sri Lankan soldiers shot dead at least two Tamil civilians during its recently concluded 'Rivijaya' military operation. Victim S. Muthulingam was a 14 year old while Thambirasa Kanthasamy was 32, both from Kithul. Family man Sabapathy Mylvaganam meanwhile disappeared during the operation and is believed by his family to have been murdered by Sinhala armed forces. Operation Rivijaya took place in Batticaloa and, like all other Sri Lankan military operations, showed no regard for the lives and property of the Tamil people. 16 Tamil houses were demolished and 100 Tamil families are reported displaced. Further civilian casualties are coming to light and will be documented when details are known.

1997 : "March For Medicine" - Huge Vanni Protests

Many thousands of Tamils across Vanni district have handed over petitions to OXFAM, MSF, CARE and ICRC after mass protests yesterday. The demonstrations, massively attended in Mankulam, Mallavi, Thunnukai, Pandiankulam and other neighbouring areas, was the Tamil people's way of condemning Sri Lanka's food and medicine ban to their areas. Sri Lanka at present has in place a strict block on essential medical items which stops Tamils obtaining even the pain-killer Panadol. Many leading members of the Vanni community at the demo condemned Sri Lanka's policy saying it used medicine as a weapon of war to cripple the Tamil people not living under its own areas of occupation. Yesterday's protest saw school-children, teachers, businessmen, doctors and even some hospital patients take to the streets and issue an appeal to the president, opposition leader and health minister to withdraw their inhuman policy against the Tamil people.

1997 : Over 200 Sri Lankan troops were killed and hundreds more badly injured when LTTE forces overran two military complexes at Paranthan and Elephant Pass today!

140 LTTE fighters lost their lives in the heavy battle which began in the early hours of Thursday morning. The LTTE's strategic objective was to nullify Sri Lanka's fire-power in this region by capturing or destroying armaments. Much of the weaponry at these bases had been used systematically by Sri Lanka to launch indiscriminate bombing raids on residential Tamil villages. The LTTE destroyed 11 long-range artillery pieces and several more armouries after its commando units penetrated Sri Lankan forward defence lines extending 10 kilometres. Nine of the artillery pieces demolished were size 122mm, while the other two were 130mm. Several ammunition dumps were also wiped out.

In addition, vast quantities of arms were captured including three 120mm mortars, three 50-calibre machine guns and hundreds of automatic guns, along with ample amounts of mortar shells and ammunition. The LTTE withdrew soon after the mission was successfully completed. Earlier today, the LTTE made arrangements for 29 recovered bodies of Sri Lankan soldiers to be handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in accordance with international humanitarian law procedures. Photo evidents of this attack were appeared on the newspapers in Tamil Eelam on the following day!

"Three Tamil women, including a mother and daughter, were raped at their home by soldiers on 9 January at Thiyavattavan in Batticaloa District. Two soldiers were taken into custody a week later by police.

1999 : Mallavi OPD treats 180 thousand patients Officials of the Department of Health said that 179,880 patients have been treated in the OPD (Out Patients Department) in Mallavi hospital in Mullaithivu district last year. The hospital has treated 43,495 patients who were affected by Malaria. Sources at the Department of Health said that the hospital has recorded 1013 births and 118 deaths last year. Mallavi hospital is functioning with minimum resources under a severe ban of important drugs and essential equipment.

2001 : Vavuniya students protest against abduction

Students of National College of Education at Poonthoddam in Vavuniya demonstrated in the northern town Wednesday, protesting against the abduction of one of their colleagues by gunmen suspected to be from a militia working with the Sri Lankan army around 9 p.m.Tuesday. Somasundaram Mukunthan, a third-year student of the college, was abducted from his home at Pandaariakulam, a suburb of Vavuniya town, by gunmen men who had come in an auto-rikshaw, student sources said.

2001 : Massive demonstration in Jaffna - 'Pongu Thamil'

More than ten thousand people in Jaffna comprising university students, high-school students, residents and representatives and members of civil organisations demonstrated Wednesday, urging the Sri Lankan government to reciprocate the Liberation Tigers unilateral ceasefire and negotiate with the movement. Thousands more people were turned away by Sri Lankan security forces at check points set up along the major roads leading to the university, residents said. Reporters were not permitted into the university either.

The Kodikamam Hospital came under fire from a Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter on 11 January at about 8.00 a.m. The helicopter fired at random at the Mirusuvil-Kodikamam main road, hitting the hospital as well. Some houses in the area and the hospital were damaged.

2001: Mannar citizens’ committee lists killed, missing

Thirty two civilians were killed due to the actions of the Sri Lankan security forces while twelve were reported missing in Mannar from January to December 2000 according to statistics released Saturday by the Citizens’ Committee for the district. The Committee said that hundred and forty three civilians were arrested by the Sri Lankan security forces in this period and that only 70 of these have been released so far

The aircraft which was equipped with the latest radar and photo technology came down in Pooneryn due to apparent mechanical failure. The whole camp was brought under LTTE control in a matter of 18 minutes in an operation which began around 9.15 PM. More than 10 Sri Lankan soldiers were killed while the rest fled in panic. Arms and ammunition were seized from the camp belonging to the occupying Sinhalese forces situated on the main Colombo highway. The camp was later destroyed by the LTTE units. One LTTE fighter - Lt. Theesanathan - died in this operation.

1998 : Hindu temples attacked

1998 : SL Army opens fire on Tamil civilians boat and kills two

Occupying Sinhalese armed forces Saturday opened fire on a civilian boat off Jaffna's coast, killing a 12-year old Tamil boy and an elderly man of 52.

2001 : SLA ambush kills one

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers lying in ambush in the jungles of Kirimichchaikulam in the Vaakarai region, about 62 km. north of Batticaloa opened fire, killing one civilian and injuring three others. According to villagers the incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Friday.

1998 : The Liberation Tigers overran and burnt the Vaakaneri army camp, eight kilometers west of Valaichenai. Army sources in Batticaloa said that more than eleven soldiers were wounded in the attack and ten of eight bodies of those killed in the attack have been recovered until this afternoon. A huge amount of arms and ammunitions were captured by LTTE.

1987 : Kokkaddichcholai massacres: over 150 Tamil civilians killed

On January 28, 1987, over 15 0 Tamil civilians were killed at Kokkaddichcholai during a military operation by members of the Special Task Force who attacked with helicopter gunships and armoured cars. The Mailanthanai massacre case in which 21 Sri Lanka army soldiers are accused of hacking to death 35 Tamils, including women, in a remote Batticaloa village on 9 August 1992 will be taken up for hearing in Colombo Monday lawyers appearing for the families of the victims said. "Justice delayed is justice denied. As with most cases in which SLA soldiers have been accused of massacring innocent Tamil civilians, a patently deliberate procrastinating strategy drawing on untenable pretexts is causing inordinate delays. This benefits the perpetrators of the murders," Mr.N. Kandasamy, a senior human rights activist in Colombo who has been monitoring the case for nine years told TamilNet Sunday.

2001 : Heads shaved to tighten Vanni embargo

Four fishermen complained to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Mannar Tuesday that the Sri Lanka Navy shaved their heads and assaulted them severely on trumped up charges that they were defying the Vanni embargo. Fishermen in Mannar complain that the SLN arrests and beats them up regularly, accusing them of smuggling essential commodities banned under Colombo's decade long economic embargo on the Vanni region. Meanwhile the SLN’s intelligence wing began deployment in the northern coastal parts of the Mannar island Tuesday. The deployment is aimed at monitoring and curbing sea borne infiltration by the Liberation Tigers from the mainland SLN, sources said.
