Four people killed, 3 disappeared

Army arrested 15 villagers. One Tamil youth and a woman were killed on the spot. The fate of 3 persons taken to army camp is not known. In another incident in Aithiyamalai, the Sri Lankan army entered into a church, pulled out 2 Tamil refugees and shot them dead.

1997 Sri Lankan Kfirs kill 3 Tamil civilians

Sri Lankan Kfir warplanes Thursday mounted an indiscriminate aerial attack on Tamil civilian targets in Pooneryn, killing three civilians and seriously wounding 9. The attack took place at 12 pm when the planes dropped their lethal bombs on innocent people. Those killed were: Selvarajah, Rooban and Theivendram. Seven of the injured were taken to Akkarayan hospital and two to Mallavi, where all are said to be fighting for their lives.

Jaffna soldiers shot dead Tamil mother

Sinhalese soldiers in Mirusuvil (Jaffna) on Saturday evening shot dead a Tamil women for sending her daughter to Colombo to save her from their regular sexual advances. The mother was on her own bringing cattle back from grazing when the soldiers gunned her down.

Tamil mother killed in army shelling

Sri Lankan forces on Thursday fired artillery from Kilinochchi town at the Tamil village of Unionkulam. The mother of four was killed when shells landed on her head. Two children close by were also severely injured. The woman's name was Thayanadevi Saravanaperumal. Sri Lankan armed forces at Kilinochchi are said to be regularly firing artillery at surrounding Tamil settlements.

SLA shelling kills

Four civilians, including a 3 year old child, were killed at 12th mile post, Visuvamadu area in Kilinochchi district, when the Sri Lankan Army fired mortars from the Elephant Pass base around 3.15 p.m. yesterday said the Voice of Tigers (VoT) radio this morning. Earlier reports said they were killed in an airstrike.

1997 : A Sri Lankan Air Force helicopter crashed today, killing 4 crewmen, according to military officials. The aircraft came down close Puliyankulam, where Liberation Tigers and Sri Lankan troops are fighting for control of a strategic highway they said. Later it was believed that this helicopter was hot down by LTTE!

1997 : Tamil Eelam's National Heroes Days are to celebrated for the three days ending November 27, which is the day the first LTTE fighter Lt.Sankar (27 Nov 1982) gave his life for the freedom of the Tamil Eelam nation. Heroes Day celebrations first started in 1989 when it was held on a single day, November 27.

From 1990-4 the programme was held over a seven-day period, ending also on the 27th. Since 1995, it has been held for 3 days ending again on the 27th. Maveerar days are held by people all over Tamil Eelam in honour of the LTTE freedom fighters. During these celebrations people light traditional oil lamps at home and in public places and ceremonies are held in which Tamil Eelam's national flag is proudly raised. People also engage in prayers for their nation, speeches are delivered by prominent people and the portraits of freedom fighters who died are suitably garlanded.

Sri Lankan supersonic jet targeted the Sri Ramakrishna Saratha Ladies College in Kokuvil. The Vice Principal of the school , Mrs. T.Sri Pathmanathan, a teacher and some students, six in all, were injured. The Science laboratory was damaged. The Principal of the college told reporters that when the sound of the plane was heard, the teachers and children rushed out of the school building to take shelter underneath nearby trees. The teachers and students who were the last to rush out were injured. Two other houses were also badly damaged!

On Friday, 26 November Sri Lanka Airforce jet dropped two bombs at Kalasalai Road in Thirunelvely. The houses of Sivapatham and Vijayaratnam were badly damaged. Immediately after this attack the supersonic jet targeted the Sri Ramakrishna Saratha Ladies College in Kokuvil. Letters of regret from Defense Ministry officials have been sent to 355 parents and relatives of persons who disappeared in the Jaffna district after the Sri Lanka Army (SLA)'s operation to capture the northern peninsula in 1995, human rights sources said.

1985 : Fishermen massacred by gunships - 24 killed - Sri Lankan security forces cordoned off the coastal village of Mandur in Batticaloa on 27 November 1985. The search operation, in which armour, helicopter gunships and an unspecified number of troops were used, left 24 Tamil fishermen shot dead and many more missing.

1998 : Hindu priest shot dead The Special Task force (STF) shot dead the priest of the Aaraipattai Kaali temple last night around 10 p.m. said Police sources in Batticaloa. Aaraipattai is a large densely populated Tamil village 7 kilometers south of Batticaloa.

Teenager shot dead A 17 year old school boy, Ramachndran Suman, was shot dead by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers at Puththur junction in Meesalai in the Thenmaradchi divisionof the Jaffna peninsula on Tuesday, 23 November, said sources.

Ehamparam Dhamayanthi, a young woman of 20 years from Kommanthurai, accused of withholding information about Liberation Tigers and kept in detention for more than 22 months, was found innocent by the Batticaloa High Courts and was released from jail. The Police had filed a case against her under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) when she was arrested by the security forces on the 2nd February 1997, said legal sources in Batticaloa.

One child was killed and two others were wounded when Sri Lankan police opened fire indiscriminately in a suburb of Vavuniya town at around 6.00pm today. The incident occurred at the Madasami Koiladi in Vairavapuliyankulam.

The nine fishermen who were reported missing early this morning after the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) attacked a group of fishing boats in the sea off Mullaithivu, between Semmalai and Alampil were all migrant Sinhalese from the island's west coast said one of their colleagues who escaped the midsea carnage and swam ashore this afternoon.

A 30 year old woman was killed yesterday when a shell fired from the Thallady Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp hit Parappukkadanthan around 2.30 p.m. said residents. Logeswary Velmuruku,30, a mother of three was seriously wounded in the shelling and died while being taken Mallavi hospital in the Vanni the sources said.

2000 : Youth identifies farmer's killers

Two Sri Lanka Army soldiers allegedly involved in the murder of a young farmer, Arunasalam Chandramohan, in Sithaandy in the eastern Batticaloa were identified by a fourteen year-old witness in an identification parade held before the Batticaloa Additional Judge, on Wednesday.

1990 : Two Tamil people killed

Army rounded up the village and killed a youth named Sundaram Prabakaran aged 25. Kunchithamby, Muthuvel, Thangarajan and another person were taken to Kaluvanchikudy army camp. Their fate is not known. In another incident in Arayampathy A girl Nallathamby Anusia was raped by the TELO, the Tamil group collaborate with the Sri Lankan army and killed. Her body was thrown into a river.

1990 : Two Tamil fishermen killed

The fishermen named Pragasam Rajendram and Rajappu Francis were shot dead by the navy while fishing in the sea.

The inquest into the death of Sathasivam Sanjeevan, an 18 year old school student who died in the Sri Lankan Police custody on October 15, was held at the Kalmunai District court on November 26. 1997 : This morning the Sri Lankan Army attempted to advance on two fronts from Puthur towards Mannankkulam, Kanakarayankulam in Vanni. The LTTE launched a counter offensive and there was heavy fighting between the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE from early morning till 3.00 pm in the evening. 300 Sinhala troops were killed, many were injured, and the Sri Lankan Army was forced to withdraw. 133 bodies of Sinhalese soldiers were recovered by the LTTE and out of these the 113 which were in good condition were handed over to the ICRC. The remaining 20 bodies which were in bad condition were cremated by the LTTE. In this successful counter offensive 35 LTTE fighters including 10 women fighters were martyred. Huge amounts of arms and ammunitions were captured by the LTTE.

A 67-year old Tamil man and a co-worker were tilling a field at Neerveli when a landmine buried by the Sri Lankan army exploded, killing both. One of them was killed on the spot while the other died after being taken to hospital.

The Sri Lankan Government said today that in the final analysis regarding complaints of disappearances in the Jaffna peninsula, 16 people were ascertained as dead, 201 were found in prisons and there was no evidence at all in respect of 174, even to commence inquiries.

The Ceylon Tamil Teachers Union (CTTU) is to ask the new Education Minister Susil Premjayanth to take immediate steps to lift the ban imposed on the transportation of all materials needed for teaching to schools in the uncleared areas in the northeast province.

1999 : 350,000 people in Wanni starving

The Bishop of Mannar, Rt. Rev. Rayappu Joseph, who visited the Wanni area at the weekend, declared yesterday that most of the 350,000 people living in the district are starving. The Bishop has requested the Governor of the North-East Province, Major General Ashoka Jayawardena to take immediate action to send food to the Wanni area.

2 Villagers named T.Krishnapillai and Y.Sivalingam who went into the jungle were shot dead by the Sri Lankan Army.

An airforce plane dropped bombs. A bomb fell near multi-purpose Co-operative society, where relief supplies were being distributed at that time. An old man named K.Tharumaiah aged 60 was blown into piece. Several others were injured.

1997 :School teacher shot dead

A school teacher identified as S. Raveenthiran was shot dead by the SLA in Kaithady in Jaffna last night around 9.30 p.m. The Chavakachcheri Police brought his body to the Jaffna hospital mortuary today claiming that it was that of an LTTE activist.

1998 :Displaced housed in schools

Ten schools in the Puthukudiyeruppu area of the Mullaithivu district, have been turned into welfare centres to accommodate the displaced refugees from the Oddusuddan area the Voice of Tigers (VoT) said.

2000 : Police say no to Jaffna Church peace march

The Sri Lankan Police Thursday refused permission to the Catholic church in the north to go on a peace procession in Jaffna town. A Catholic church spokesman said that the Police denied permission for the procession on the grounds that the security situation in the Jaffna town did not permit it. He said the march had been organised as a remembrance of a saint of the church.

The body of Christy Jesuthsan,25, was found washed ashore at Pallimunai, a suburb of Mannar town, this afternoon said sources. He had been arrested by the Counter Subversive Unit (CSU) of the Police and later released by the Mannar Magistrate Mr.Ilancheliyan on October 14.

1999 : 4 boys missing in Jaffna

Four schoolboys have been reported 'missing' by their parents in the Thenmaradchi Division of the Jaffna Peninsula, said sources. The parents have informed the Human Rights Commission and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) officials, the sources said. According to HRC sources the students are from Kachchai road of Kodikamam. Thangamailan Mayooran,17, G.C.E (A/L) is a student at the Chavakachcheri Hindu College. The other three, Velnayagam Maran,Sinnathamby Mathiyalakan, Thambirasa Latheeswaran, are students of Thirunavukkarasu Maha Vidyalayam.

Mr. R. Sambanthan, TULF parliamentarian for the Trincomalee district, said in parliament yesterday that Tamil medium schools in the Northeast province were being neglected and that Tamil medium teachers were discriminated against.

4 Tamils were stabbed by the Sinhala home guards armed by the government. T.Arul, T.Tharuman succumbed to the injuries.

1997 : Asian Human Rights Commission reports on protests against disappearances...

"A protest rally and picketing was held in front of the main railway station in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, on International Human Rights Day, 10 December 1997, to bring to the attention of the public and the government the disappearances issue. The fate of about 600 people who disappeared from Jaffna Peninsula in recent times is unknown. The general suspicion is that they were killed after their arrests. The protest was supported by the Nava Lanka Samasamja Party and a government Member of Parliament, Vasudeva Nanayakkara.

1997 : Tamil student killed by army

A 19-year old Tamil student was killed when Sri Lankan police at Jayanthipuram (Batticaloa) opened fire on him. The student's name was Kirupananthan Arulnathan. He was killed on the way to his house.

1998 : UNHCR urged to take action

The Consortium of Non Governmental Organisation (NGOs) in Puthukudiyeryppu, in the Mullaithivu district has sent a memorandum to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

1998 : Batticaloa women protest

Several women's groups in Batticaloa staged a token sit-in today in Batticaloa town to mark human rights day. About 150 women took part in the sit in demonstration in the town centre. The sit in was organised by eighteen women's groups that are active in the region.

During the month of November the ICRC assisted 30,000 Sri Lankan civilians displaced within the northern part of the island as a result of the offensive launched on 1 November by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

1997 : Tamil Student Killed By Army

A 19-year old Tamil student was killed when Sri Lankan police at Jayanthipuram (Batticaloa) opened fire on him. The student's name was Kirupananthan Arulnathan. He was killed on the way to his house.

1997 : Two Pregnant Tamil Women Lose Babies Due To Sinhala Army

A 24-year old pregnant Tamil woman, Tharmalingam Yasotha, was travelling on a bus recently near Kaluthavai (in Batticaloa district) when a group of Sri Lankan soldiers, also on the bus, dropped a grenade near her. The woman suffered injuries and was taken to hospital, where her unborn baby was discovered to have died in the womb. Also, last Friday at Valaichchenai, Sri Lankan forces opened fire on Tamil civilians, injuring a pregnant mother named Thayalini. Thayalini's unborn baby had to be removed from her womb after bullets went through her stomach, killing the baby.

2000 : SLA arrests, beats-up students

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers arrested four youths from Karuvakerni near Valaichenai in Batticaloa at 3 am today morning and severly beat the youths before releasing them, said village residents.

2000 : Hospital employees to stage demonstration

Doctors, nurses and other employees of Batticaloa General Hospital have planned to stage a protest march in Batticaloa town tomorrow morning demanding that Security Forces engaged in battle in the North and East should not use civilians as human shields and that no armed personnel should travel in vehicles carrying civilian passengers, hospital sources said.

1997 : At 2:00 PM today, Sinhalese convicts at Kalutara jail attacked Tamil political prisoners, killing three while jail guards and the army stood by. Many more Tamil prisoners were injured in the attack. The Tamil prisoners had earlier been languishing without trial at Colombo's Welikada prison, where they were holding a fast asking for release or for their cases to be heard. Sinhalese police had forcibly transferred them to Kalutara prison to try and disrupt the protest. Sinhalese prisoners at Kalutura attacked the Tamils with knives, clubs and iron rods. Prison officers did not take any of the injured Tamils to hospital up to last night. The names of two of the dead prisoners are now available - Maruthalingam Tharmalingam (24) and Shanmugarajah Sivanesan (28). It is now known that the day before the assault Sinhalese prisoners at Kalutara had thrown stones at the Tamils, injuring several.

1997 : Liberation Tigers ambushed a group of SLA soldiers travelling in a tractor between Olumadu and Keerisudan by blasting a claymore mine around 1.30 p.m today.6 Sri Lankan soldiers were killed in the ambush.

1998 : Congressional discussion focuses on Rights violations

A five member panel of experts on Human Rights violations in Sri Lanka, speaking at Congressional Human Rights Caucus staff round table discussions, were unanimous in their call to the Sri Lankan Government to expedite the investigations into the alleged mass graves at Chemmani, Jaffna where up to 400 bodies of Tamils disappeared in 1996 and 1997 may be buried.

1999 : Hundreds of Sri Lankan troops were killed and injured as the current LTTE's offensive campaign spread and intensified to several sectors of Thenmarachi in the Jaffna peninsula.

1998 : Mannar marks human rights day

The Committee for Justice, Peace and Human Rights of the Mannar diocese organised a procession on December 10, to mark International Human Rights Day. The procession headed by Rev. Emilianuspillai began at St. Sebastian church in Mannar.

A mentally ill Tamil person from the Batticaloa mental hospital was shot dead by the Sinhalese army as he tried to jump over a wall. The man was 20 years old.

1999 : Schoolgirl raped

A group of 5, including a Sri Lanka Army deserter, sexually assaulted a 13 year old school girl, in Mawanella about 55 km, east of Colombo on the Kandy road, said sources.

2000 : Jaffna student beaten up on suspicion

The parents of a Jaffna school boy, Sothiraj Nishanthan,17, alleged Wednesday that their son was abducted and tortured by a person suspected to be an intelligence operative working for the Sri Lanka army. The boy was admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for treatment with severe contusions on Tuesday 12 december.

2000 : Two civilians killed in SLN ambush

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) personnel lying in ambush in Iqbal Nagar, north of Trincomalee shot and killed two Tamil civilians around 5 p.m. Wednesday. The victims, Shanmugaraja Swarnahasan and Mahalingam Thamiran, were returning to their village, Gopalapuram, on a motorbike from Trincomalee town when they shot at, sources said.

2000 : Police tortured say young Jaffna women

The Vavuniya High Court last Tuesday discharged two young girls from Jaffna charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), on the ground that the Police had obtained confessions from them under duress. Mariyathas Mary Sharmila,18, of Alvai north and Shanmugam Sharmila, 21, of Sivankoviladi, Madduvil south told the court that they were severely tortured by male Police personnel during their detention.

2000 : Two hunters shot dead by SLAF

Pampaimadhu residents, Arulanantham Kamalanathan (29), and Sinnathamby Sivakumar (30) who went hunting in Poovarasankulam, Vavuniya were shot and killed by Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) personnel on Monday evening, said sources. SLAF claimed that the men were LTTE members and that they had recovered two grenades and a pistol from the dead men.

      அந்த 2001 பொங்கலின் மறுநாள் அவனது குரல்வழி வந்த அந்தச் செய்தி. என் உயிர் நாடிகளை இப்போதும் வலிக்கச் செய்கிறது. அது அவனுக்கும் அவனது அவர்களுக்கும் புதிதில்லைத்தான். அது அவர்களின் இலட்சியத்துக்கு இன்னும் வலுச்சேர்க்கும். ஆனால் என்னால் அழாமல் , அதைப்பற்றி எண்ணாமல் , இனிவரும் வருடங்களில் எந்தப் பொங்கலையும் கொண்டாட முடியாதபடி எனக்குள் அவனது குரலும் அவன் தந்த செய்திகளும் ஒலித்துக் கொண்டேயிருக்கும்.

      காதலர் தினத்தை வழக்கமான தமது அரசியல் நிலைபாடுகளை பொறுத்து அணுகும் செயலை பல்வேறு தரப்பினரும் உற்சாகமாக செய்து வருகின்றனர்.கிரீட்டிங் கார்டுகளையும், சாக்லடுகளையும் விற்க அமெரிக்க கம்பனிகள் சதி செய்வதாக கூறி காம்ரேடுகள் இதை எதிர்த்து வருகின்றனர்.அமெரிக்க கலாச்சாரத்தை திணிக்க முயற்சி நடப்பதாக கூறி சிவசேனாவினரும் இதை முழுமூச்சில் எதிர்க்கின்றனர். தமிழ்நாட்டில் பாமக ராமதாஸ் இதை கண்டித்து அறிக்கை விட்டுள்ளார். பாகிஸ்தானிலும், அரபுநாடுகளிலும் இதை எதிர்த்து பத்வாக்கள் பிறப்பிக்கப்பட்டு அதை மீறி இளைஞர்கள் இதை கொண்டாடியதாக செய்திகள் வந்துள்ளன.

      சூளையில் வைத்துச் சுட்டுச் செய்த மண் பாத்திரத்தில் வைக்கும் கறியின் சுவை எப்படியானது என்று அந்தப் பாத்திரத்துக்கு விளங்குமா? அது போல, எம்முள்ளே எருக்கும் இறைவனை நீ அறியாமல் ஒரு கல்லினுள் கடவுள் இருப்பதாக நம்பி வெறும் கல்லை அராதித்து வழிபடுகிறாய்.
