1996 : Three female bodies, some in school uniforms, were found washed ashore in gunny bags on Mullaitivu coast. One of the bodies of a girl in school uniform was found with a necktie of a leading girls’ school in Chundikuli. Red Cross sources have received reports of bodies found at Mullaitivu.

1997 : Tamil prisoners murdered in custody

"Amnesty International today appealed to Sri Lanka's Minister of Justice to order a full and impartial inquiry into the killing of three Tamil detainees on 12 December at Kalutara prison, south of the capital, Colombo. In its letter to Professor G. L. Peiris, the human rights organization expressed concern for the safety of other detainees who witnessed the killings and are currently under guard by prison staff who may have been involved in the act. Amnesty International urges that all necessary steps be taken to protect these witnesses.

1996 : Four civilians in a school killed by SLAF

SLAF aircraft destroy a school in Pavatkodichenai, Batticaloa, killing 4 civilians. The school was badly damaged.

1996 : 400,000 displaced Tamils in Vanni says US Committee for Refugees

"...There are an estimated 400,000 displaced persons in the Vanni-jungle region in the north of Sri Lanka that is largely under the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). According to NGOs and local government officials, many of the displaced possibly as many as half do not receive government assistance, allegedly because the government views the group as possible LTTE supporters. The government also does not assist Kilinochchi residents who fled their district following the Sri Lankan military's July military offensive there.

Three unidentified male bodies with head injuries washed ashore at Pallimunai area, near the cemetery, yesterday afternoon. The bodies were brought to the Mannar hospital by the Police around 5 p.m. in the evening said sources.

Paranthan army camp, situated strategically on the southern sector of Elephant Pass base complex, has fallen to the LTTE fighters today after intense fighting that lasted more than 24 hours. Paranthan junction and its surrounding areas are now under the control of the LTTE fighters.

1990 : 3 Tamil villagers killed

Special Task Force personnel abducted 3 villagers from Aladivembu, Amparai and shot them dead.

1990 :5 Tamil villagers killed

Five Tamil villagers from Thanthamalai, Batticoloa who were grazing the cattle have been killed by the army. The details are: Vandaiyar aged 20 from Kachchakodi. Krishnapillai Navaratnam aged 21 from Kachchakodi. Nadarajah Selvam aged 18 from Kachchakodi. Muthiah Uthayakumar aged 20 from 31st colony. Sinniah Ariyanayagam aged 18 from Chettipalayam.

1990 : 9 Tamil villagers killed

The Muslim home guards armed by the government forces entered into the houses in Valaichenai, Batticoloa, dragged out 9 Tamil civilians and hacked them to death. Details of 3 persons are, 1.Nallathamby Kanthasamy age 37, Puthukudiyiruppu Valaichenai. 2. Nallathamby Palaiyah age 31 father of 5 children from Puthukudiyiruppu Valaichenai. 3. Arumugam Nadarasa age 27 from Patthanai Valaichenai.

1998:Shelling victim dies

An elderly civilian, M.Vadivel (74), who was wounded by a shell fired from the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) base at Elephant Pass, towards Muththyankaddu on December 3, died in a Colombo hospital, said sources.

1998 : "Human rights cases denied adequate aid"

The Director of the Trincomalee Legal Aid Centre, Mr. Sivapalan, said that the Sri Lankan Government does not give adequate help to those who file human rights cases. Mr Sivapalan, who is also a lawyer, made these comments while speaking at a seminar to mark Human Rights Day.

2000 : Shelling kills one, injures 2

A sixteen year old girl was killed and two others were wounded when shells fired by Sri Lankan police hit 5th district Eravur, 12 km. north of Batticaloa, around 10 p.m. Saturday night, residents said.

1997 : Today, LTTE forces launched an attack on Sinhalese armed forces who had ventured out of their 6th Mile Post army camp in Batticaloa. Soldiers were 200 metres outside their camp when the ambush took place. The incident happened at 9:40 AM and some arms and ammunition were captured from the occupying armed forces. 4 Sri Lankan soldiers were killed for the loss of no LTTE casualties. The 6th Mile Post army camp is situated in Batticaloa town's main street

1999 : The well-fortified defences around the southern sector of Elephant Pass military complex have crumbled following the fall of two more military bases to the LTTE in the area between Paranthan and Elephant Pass. The Paranthan chemical factory base, which housed the 546 Brigade headquarters and the Kurakkan Kadukulam army camp were brought under the control of the Tamil Tiger fighters after fierce fighting that lasted for several hours.

2000 :Amnesty fears for safety of Tamil villagers

Amnesty International in a statement published yesterday said that it fears for safety of villagers of Gopalapuram in Trincomalee district from Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) personnel. The statement was issued following the torture and murder, allegedly by the navy, of two young Tamil men, Mahalingam Thamiran and Shanmugarajan Sornahasan, who were previously threatened after the villagers protested against the killing of several villagers by the navy.

Last Friday, a 26-year old Tamil man detained in a Vavuniya school-turned refugee camp has been found hanged on the premises. His death is being viewed as extremely suspicious as he had severe injuries on his body. The story issued by the camp's Sinhalese security personnel - that the man died after drinking poison - is being viewed with cynicism.

1997 : Tamils appeal to world leaders to end Sri Lanka torture & murder of detainees

The International Federation of Tamils with headquarters in Switzerland, appealed to world leaders on 23 December 1997 to lend their influential support to end the continuing torture and murder of Tamil prisoners in the custody of the government of Sri Lanka. The appeal said:

1997: The Liberation Tigers attacked the STF camp in Pullukunavi in the early hours of the morning today around 2 a.m. Initial reports said that 17 STF commandos were killed in the attack. However details of the injured and the exact damage to the STF camp are not yet available. The Pullukunavi STF camp was overrun by the Liberation Tigers in December 1996 by the Liberation Tigers who removed a large stock weapons from it including an 81 mm Howitzer.

1993: Manal Aru village was bombed!

At about 8.40 a.m on Monday, 28 December 1993, two Sri Lanka Airforce bombers dropped five bombs in Alampil, a village in the Manal Aru area. Five houses were damaged. The Multi Purpose Coop Society building was completely destroyed. Siyamani Komala (aged 4) and her brother Siyamani Theepan (aged 12) were killed. Another young girl Priya (aged 18) was also killed by the attack. Siyamani Jayaranjani (aged 8), a sister of the deceased Komala and Theepan, and who was taken to the Killinochchi Hospital, later succumbed to her injuries and died.

1997 : SL Army shoots dead a Tamil youth

Sinhalese armed forces on Thursday shot dead Jogarajah an innocent eighteen-year-old Tamil youth in Madduvil (Jaffna) as he was reading the local election poster. The armed forces then claimed that the youth was tearing the poster and that they found a hand grenade in his possession.

2000: Staff of the Jaffna University demonstrated inside the campus premises on Friday voicing support to the political demands of the Tamil people, and demanding the Sri Lankan Government to declare cease-fire and to begin negotiations with the Liberation Tigers, sources in the northern town said.

Protestors also shouted slogans and carried banners which read "Recognise Tamil people's right to self determination," "Recognize the traditional homeland of Tamil people," and "Sri Lanka Government, begin peace talks with Liberation Tigers, the sole representatives of Tamil people," sources said.

The Students' Union organised a meeting at the Kailasapathy Hall before the picketing which began at 10 a.m. and went on till 12 noon.

Vice Chancellor of the University Prof.Balasundarampillai, Prof.Sittampalam and many student leaders spoke at the meeting.

Prof.Balasundarampillai said he was happy to see the university community coming together and expressing solidarity with the Tamil people in their wish to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. "I can witness an enlightened and energetic student group," Balasundarampillai added.

The Student Union distributed a handout which said, "Tamil people wish to live with dignity in an environment of permanent peace. Peace can only be achieved by fulfilling the aspirations of the Tamil people. The Sri Lanka Government should come forward to declare a ceasefire as Liberation Tigers have done and to engage in peace talks."

At about 10.15 a.m. on Friday, 31 December 1993, a Sri Lanka Air Force Argentine made Puccaro bomber dropped four bombs on Kumilamunai in the Manal Aru area. A young woman, Sutsuthananthy was killed on the spot. Two houses were razed to the ground.

1997 : Jayasikurui displaces thousand families

Social workers in the Vanni said that 4481 people belonging to 1081 families have been displaced by the onslaught of the eight month old Operation Jayasikurui of the Sri Lankan army. Of these 4481 people have settled temporarily in the Karachchi division, 356 people in Kandawalai and 3068 people in Pooneryn.

1997 : 3 Tamil civilians dies in army mine

3 Tamil civilians Sunday died in an army mine explosion in Velanai island (Jaffna). The three were travelling in a tractor when it ran over a pressure mine buried by the occupying Sinhalese army. Two people - Ponnaiah Saminathan (52) and Maialagan (40) - died on the spot while the tractor was totally destroyed. The other person - Iyathurai Thanchaiyan (45) - died in the Jaffna hospital. The place where the explosion happened was formerly a Sri Lankan army camp.

Six young men from the plantation areas of Sri Lanka, who have been detained for nearly 19 months without trial, have said that they will stage a hunger strike along with two Tamil teachers from January 1 to demand their release. The hunger strike is to publicise their case, which last came before the court on September 27, only to be postponed until next April 26.

1997 : More Rapes - Stf Discipline Breaking Down

Sri Lankan soldiers have violently raped three Tamil women in Batticaloa. At 3am (January 2nd) troops broke into a Tamil house where a mother, daughter and woman relative were sleeping. The rapes took place at gun-point. Neighbours later admitted all three to Valaichenai hospital. The soldiers are members of the STF, the so-called elite force of the Sri Lankan army. Rapes by the STF are said to be occurring on a regular basis in Sri Lankan-occupied areas. Last week, two incidents were reported in Mandoor, fuelling anxieties that military discipline in occupied territory is rapidly breaking down, especially in Batticaloa. Local Tamil women live in terror of the STF whose recent record of indiscipline is staggering.

2001 : Drug shortage threatens pregnant women

Hundreds of pregnant women in the northern parts of the Batticaloa district are threatened by the unavailability of a drug (Ecometrine) that controls bleeding during childbirth at the Valaichenai hospital. Medical officers told Mr.M. Abdul Cader, deputy minister for Health who visited the hospital Tuesday that many other essential drugs are in short supply and that the maternity ward building is dilapidated and is functioning without basic facilities.

1997 : Pregnant lady found dead on roadside

A Tamil woman has been found dead on a drenched street in Vavuniya with her new-born baby screaming by her side. The pregnant woman had been suffering from medical complications and was due in Colombo for treatment. But Sri Lankan military officials cut short her journey at Vavuniya forcing her to remain in a house near one of the notorious detention centres refusing to permit her passage to Colombo. They ignored her repeated pleas to leave Vavuniya. On the night of 26th December Kandasamy Vijayakumari ventured out in the heavy rain desperately seeking medical attention. She didn't get far. A passer-by found her dead body in a puddle with her new-born child lying alive next to her. The baby was rushed to a hospital but doctors were unable to save him. Kandasamy Vijayakumari was 33 and a mother of three other children. She came from Mankulam.

1999 : Busy 1998 for Mullaithivu hospital

About three hundred and eleven thousand patients have been treated in the Mullaithivu hospital, during the last year ending December 20 said sources at the Department of Health. The hospital was relocated to the Peripheral Unit hospital building at Puthukudiyeruppu in the district several years ago.

1997 : Tamil Man Shot In Front Of Wife And Children

Sri Lankan soldiers in army-occupied Meesalai in Thenmaradchy (Jaffna) have executed a Tamil man in front of his house. The troops stormed Nagalingam Varapragasam's home while his wife and six children were having dinner with him and without explanation hauled him into the street where they sprayed bullets on him . His wife too was assaulted when she tried to save her husband. Atrocities like this in Sri Lankan army-occupied areas have escalated to disturbing levels.

1997 : Commandos Rape Married Woman

Sri Lankan commandos of the Mansoor Tileworks army camp (Batticaloa) have raped and caused grievous injury to a Tamil woman carrying food to her husband. She was on her way to a paddy field where her husband was working when Sri Lankan STF troops intercepted her, raped her at gun-point then beat her viciously about the body. She is currently undergoing treatment at Batticaloa hospital.

2001 : Tamil political prisoner murdered

A Tamil political prisoner held at Kalutara prison was found stabbed to death on Thursday morning local police said. His body was found in a section of the prison where nearly 600 Tamil political detainees are held.

2001 : 152 arrested, 73 missing in Jaffna in 2000

Seventy three civilians were reported missing in the Jaffna peninsula from January to September in 2000 according to a report put out by the Human Rights Commission in Jaffna Thursday. The report said that 152 persons were arrested by the Sri Lankan security forces during this period. Four hundred and twenty one civilians were wounded and hundred and thirty one were killed in Jaffna last year due to the war, the report adds. Of these 156 were wounded and 26 were killed in the month of May alone according to the HRC report.

1985 : Sri Lankan troops killed 8 Tamils outside of a Vankalar Catholic church, near the town of Mannar. The parish priest was also killed as he attempted to open the chapel doors.Thereafter, soldiers broke into the chapel, reportedly killing two boys, ages 12 and 14, who had been living with the priest.

1994 : Two Sri Lanka Argentine made Puccaro planes flew into Jaffna on Wednesday 5 January at about 10.30 a.m. and bombed the village of Thavady. Three women and an infant were killed. Their bodies were torn and limbs and flesh were strewn all over. The deceased were S.T.Saras-wathy (aged 39), her niece Santhini (aged 23), Mrs.P.Selvaratnam (aged 65) and her grand daughter, M.Logiga (aged 3). They were all displaced person Thaiyiddy. Three houses were completely destroyed. Several other houses were damaged. The Thavady Sub Post Office and the office of the Grama Sevaka were also badly damaged. A school was in session within a hundred yards from where the bombs exploded. Fortunately no splinters hit the school and the children escaped without injuries.

2001 : The Sri Lankan government will not in anyway respond to the cease-fire unilaterally declared by the Liberation Tigers last month said Sri Lanka's Minister for Media, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, addressing a press conference in Colombo Friday to announce this week's cabinet decisions.

The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar had clearly stated the position of People's Alliance government regarding a cease-fire and the conditions in which it may consider one, according to Mr.Yapa.

The Sri Lankan government has stated that it would weigh the possibility of a cease-fire only if peace talks with the Liberation Tigers were to make substantial progress. The Tigers on the other hand say that there should be some manner of conflict de-escalation in the form of easing restrictions on civilian life in the Vanni to create a conducive climate of mutual trust for starting talks.

Mr.Yapa claimed that the Liberation Tigers had not apprised his government through a third party mediator such as Norway but had announced the cease-fire on their own through the media.

Four of the sixty have been confirmed dead, the official added. Meanwhile, Sinnathamby Thavarajah, from Nallur in Jaffna, has been reported missing since new years day. His relatives said that he went to Chavakachcheri and did not return home. They have made an entry at the HRC.

1997 : Casualities from 'Operation Rivigaya'

Sri Lankan soldiers shot dead at least two Tamil civilians during its recently concluded 'Rivijaya' military operation. Victim S. Muthulingam was a 14 year old while Thambirasa Kanthasamy was 32, both from Kithul. Family man Sabapathy Mylvaganam meanwhile disappeared during the operation and is believed by his family to have been murdered by Sinhala armed forces. Operation Rivijaya took place in Batticaloa and, like all other Sri Lankan military operations, showed no regard for the lives and property of the Tamil people. 16 Tamil houses were demolished and 100 Tamil families are reported displaced. Further civilian casualties are coming to light and will be documented when details are known.

2000 : BRUTAL GANG-RAPE AND MURDER OF YOUNG WOMAN BY SRI LANKA NAVY

On the evening of Tuesday 28th December 1999, Sarathambal Saravanbavananthakurukal, of a Hindu Brahmin family, was forcibly dragged from her home, in Pungudutivu, near Jaffna Peninsula, by Sri Lankan Navy soldiers. They then gang-raped and murdered her in cold blood. The body of the 29 year-old mother was found the following morning, under leaves, not far from her home near Kannaki Amman Temple.

2000 : Youth missing after arrest

A 22 year old youth arrested by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers from the Valaichenai Harbour View camp has been reported 'missing' according to his parents. SLA officials, when contacted by Batticaloa parliamentarian Mr.Pararajasingham, has denied the arrest of the youth.

2000 : Opposition slams President's "racist" speech

Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunge's marathon television speech on January 3 was an attempt to kindle racist feelings in the country, said the leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe when briefing the press Thursday morning.

2000 : Detainee dies in prison violence

One of the 34 wounded Tamil detainees admitted to hospital following violence which erupted at 2 p.m. today at Kalutara Prison, about 40 km. south of Colombo has died, hospital sources said today.

1997 : Two Civilians Shot Dead

Sri Lankan soldiers shot dead at least two Tamil civilians during its recently concluded 'Rivijaya' military operation. Victim S. Muthulingam was a 14 year old while Thambirasa Kanthasamy was 32, both from Kithul. Family man Sabapathy Mylvaganam meanwhile disappeared during the operation and is believed by his family to have been murdered by Sinhala armed forces. Operation Rivijaya took place in Batticaloa and, like all other Sri Lankan military operations, showed no regard for the lives and property of the Tamil people. 16 Tamil houses were demolished and 100 Tamil families are reported displaced. Further civilian casualties are coming to light and will be documented when details are known.

1994 : Thondamanaru strafed by helicopters

At about 10 a.m. there were helicopter strafing at Thondamanru in the Vadamartchy area. The Veerakathipllai school was attacked. The children and teachers escaped without injuries but the school building was damaged. Heli attacks also took place in Navandil, Udupiddy, Valvettiturai, Putur and Avarangal villages on 7 January.

2000 : 1000 arrests in Colombo

Over one thousand Tamils were arrested during a massive search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Airforce and Police in Colombo and its suburbs after the enforcing of a curfew from midnight. The curfew was relaxed at 12.30 p.m., one-and-a-half hours earlier than announced.
