- Image Description The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), commonly known as the Tamil Tigers, is a militant Tamil nationalist organization that has waged a violent secessionist campaign against the Sri Lankan government since the 1970s in order to create a separate Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. From the early 1970s, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have developed into a formidable fighting force involved in guerrilla atacks against the Sri Lankan armed forces and on political targets. The fighting force is said to be around 10,000 men and women, who use artillery, surface-to-air missiles and rocket launchers. They also are known to recruit under-age children to fight. The LTTE advocates equality for women, and has a large number of female recruits. An estimated 4000 women cadres have been killed since then, including over a hundred in 'Black Tiger' suicide squads.Cemetery of suicide bombers. In the neighbourhood of Kilinochchi is a Tamil fighters cemetery with a section of (mainly female) suicide bombers: one of them killed India's Ravi Nehru.
