I was born in Tamil Nadu and moved to America after my 1st birthday. Needless to say, I was your average American Tamil girl caught between two cultures. My parents, on one side, pressuring me into marriage. On the other side, I was trying to find myself, let alone somebody that I actually wanted to spend the rest of my life with). The older I got, the more I realized that marriage was not for me. “What?! A Tamil girl not getting married – what a ludicrous idea!” I could already hear my parents, uncles, and aunties losing their minds. My entire life goal was to make my parents proud, but I just couldn’t be tied down by marriage. I started living alone at the age of…

KURUMBASIDDY, Sri Lanka (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The civil war in northern Sri Lanka ended more than a decade ago, but Shan Raj’s ancestral home is still surrounded by a fence of barbed wire. Every year, Raj comes all the way from Australia to his home village of Kurumbasiddy, near the once war-torn city of Jaffna, with the hope of being able to visit the 11-room house his father built alongside the family-owned rice mill. He has not been inside his childhood home since June 1990. That was when his family’s property, along with that of more than 100 families living in the area 395km (245 miles) north of the capital Colombo, was declared part of a high…

Earlier this month, a Chinese surveillance vessel rammed and sunk a Vietnamese fishing boat in the South China Sea — bringing into the spotlight Beijing’s multi-year assertions in the disputed waters. “Fundamentally, China has not let the Covid-19 outbreak dampen its pursuit of foreign policy issues,” said Kelsey Broderick, China analyst at consultancy Eurasia Group. The U.S. hit out at China for sinking the Vietnamese fishing boat, saying that it’s “seriously concerned” by reports of what Beijing did; while China accused the U.S. for attempting to negate its “legitimate claims” in the South China Sea. Further mistrust between the U.S. and China is unne…

பொழுதுபோகாவிட்டால் இதையும் செய்து பாருங்கள்.. Time to get crafty while in quarantine. BY MARINA LIAO APR 10, 2020 Right when we've exhausted all the ways to keep ourselves busy during self-quarantine—baking banana bread, completing puzzles, trying viral TikTok dances, even growing our own scallions in water—another form of entertainment has popped up. (No it's not a new TV show, although, personally, I've been binge-watching a lot of K-dramas lately.) The creative and new challenge is coming from fashion house Alexander McQueen. The brand has put out a call for everyone to create a three-dimensional flower using any materials they can find in their o…

The precautions taken by some employers over the coronavirus mean you may find yourself working from home, some for the first time. For example, Telstra says it wants any Australian-based office staff who can work from home to do so until the end of the month “at a minimum”. Many other employers are encouraging their staff to do the same. You might feel this is a chance to stay in pyjamas all day, graze your way through the kitchen cupboards, and balan…
