Sack The Political Thug! The year 2007 ended for the country in a tragicomedy. Tragic it was because the scenes at the Rupavahini studios on Thursday involving a minister of state accompanied by his 'bodyguard' - a double murder suspect released on bail - was a disgrace to any self-respecting nation, particularly one which boasts of an ancient civilisation and culture. The comedy was that the pint-sized comedian and his bodyguard were served their just desserts however unpalatable it may have been by the staff of the government's main propaganda institution which has the most trusted personnel of the ruling party. While violence in any form cannot be condoned …

[TamilNet, Thursday, 03 October 2013, 23:38 GMT] The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) should learn from history, and from the experience of their predecessors, on what should NOT be done, writes Tamil Nadu political activist Poonkuzhali Nedumaran in a feature sent to TamilNet this week. She cited the history of TNA’s predecessor TULF failing in upholding the responsibility it was vested with by the people in 1977, compromising with District Councils and how that triggered the Tamil youth to lose confidence in parliamentary methods. The NPC election results mean communication of a will than participation in governance. With the Eezham Tamils rejecting the polity and rule of …

November 21st marks 180 days after the Government of Sri Lanka pledged that the refugees would be resettled within 180 days. Yet tens of thousands of Tamils families are languishing in camps with no sign of repatriation. Amnesty International released a report in August entitled “Unlock the Camps”. The LTTE defense spokesperson Ilanthirayan speaking about the allegations made by the Government of Sri Lanka re the two bomb blasts on Friday and Saturday said, “Government of Sri Lanka is trying to blame the LTTE for the two bomb blasts in the south of the island on Friday and Saturday. This is a baseless allegation made without any evidence to support it. GoSL attempt at blaming the LTTE is aimed at discrediting the LTTE”. “This is a feeble attempt by the GoSL which stands accused of horrendous and repeated crimes against humanity carried out against the Tamil people in the Tamil homeland”, Ilanthirayan added.

World Bank population data from Sri Lanka indicates up to a hundred thousand Tamils are unaccounted for after the final war against the Tamil Tiger rebels in 2009, raising questions about whether they could be dead. A UN report cited a death toll of forty thousand for the climax of the war in 2009 but a UN internal inquiry last month acknowledged for the first time that up to seventy thousand civilian deaths were possible. The leaked World Bank spreadsheets broken down by village for the north of the island estimate numbers of returnees to the former conflict area in mid 2010. The Bank also cites Statistical Handbook Numbers for population in 2007 - before the fighting …

Publishing a book about a highly charged ethnic conflict in which tens of thousands have died is no path to a peaceful life. You only need to look at the racial abuse and filthy language in the comments sections of online sites frequented by Sri Lankans to see how intense the emotions still are. Like anyone who writes on Sri Lanka I’ve had my share of abuse from both sides. I’ve been told I am covered in the blood of the babies who perished in the killing fields, that I’ve been making money out of the dead, and am a terrorist or “white Tiger” not to mention, a hysterical liar. But what the public doesn’t see are the private messages from readers around the world. Ev…

Negative wealth effect By TN Ninan, editor and publisher of Business Standard Published: June 20 2006 06:20 | Last updated: June 20 2006 06:20 The key question to be asked is what effect the gyrations on the stock market will have on the real economy. Will the sharp drop in share prices mean that the real economy too will slow down? That is easy, and the answer is “Yes”. The tricky part is figuring out by how much. To take the macro picture first, a net outflow of portfolio investment means that the dollar inflow, which helped pay for the large deficit on trade in goods and services (more than $20bn a year), is no longer there. This puts pressure on the …

Migrant ship's passengers deserve 'due process': lawyer By DHARM MAKWANA, QMI Agency VANCOUVER – More than 200 migrants aboard cargo ship MV Sun Sea apparently bound for B.C. are entitled to due process of their refugee claims, said a Toronto-based lawyer. Gary Anandasangaree, who was in Vancouver last October to provide legal counsel to 76 Tamil men aboard the MV Ocean Lady, said Canadians should ask why these people have taken such an “extraordinary risk” in crossing the Pacific Ocean. “The danger that we face here is that there’s significant generalization as to who and what they are,” he said. “First and foremost, we have to look at these people as…
