Officially know as the group's political adviser and theoretician, for over 25 years he played a unique role in the political struggle of Sri Lanka's Tamil minority. Over the years, this normally reticent man was the public face of the Tamil Tigers. Living in London, it was his job to communicate with the outside world about the aspirations of his people. He was the main force in bringing the attention of the world to a forgotten war in this small island nation. Political solution Earlier in his life, Balasingham worked a…

He was fortunate that Mrs Adele Balasingham was by his side all along in all his endeavours until the last minute of his life. We would like to share our hea…

The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said Friday they told a Norwegian envoy to persuade the government to open the land access to the embattled north without conditions. The government had asked Jon Hanssen-Bauer to secure a deal with the Tigers to allow a convoy of some 400 trucks to travel through rebel-held territory, but the Tigers rejected a one-off convoy. Sri Lanka to crack down on terror but no rebel ban COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka will introduce tough emergency regulations to curb terrorist activities but will not impose a ban on Tamil Tiger rebels, the island's government said on Wednesday. A formal announcement is likely to be made later Wednesday. Supporters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam had warned that a ban would effectively scupper the peace process. "...The State is compelled to make some hard choices. Prime among these issues is whether the government should reclamp the ban on the Tigers. Another is whether the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) should be rigorously reinforced," Daily News said in an editorial. "There are arguments for and aga…

Sri Lanka: A Glimpse Into Our Apocalyptic Future?by Tom Plate, AsiaMedia News Daily, November 30, 2006 Tom Plate says, in our global village, we can't afford to turn away from the town burning next door Los Angeles --- You can, as smugly as you want, view the savage, desperate, dire deterioration in Sri Lanka as little more than a flashback to the past -- a kind of backslide into the dank grave of history. Those silly little Sri Lankans, how they kill one another over there in the shadow of the island's beauty, in their half-forgotten country, off the coast of India, about which no one really cares. Or -- more alertly, more sagely -- you could view th…

Led by V. Muralitharan, a former Tamil Tiger commander known as Karuna, the group has abducted hundreds of boys and young men in eastern Sri Lanka…
