Who in Army HQ tipped off bomber? A female suicide bomber infiltrated the heavily-fortified Army Headquarters in Colombo. She threw herself before Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka's motorcade. If not for motorcycle outrider Corporal Ruwan Yakandawala, who kicked her, faced the full brunt of the explosion and died on the spot, Lt. Gen. Fonseka would be no more. But he was badly wounded and had to undergo emergency surgery. He is still under inten…

COLOMBO, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka is among the most dangerous places on earth for humanitarian workers, the UN's aid chief says, calling on the government to probe civil war abuses and consider an international rights monitoring mission. Aid agencies say 34 humanitarian staff have been killed in Sri Lanka since January 2006, including 17 local staff of Action Contre La Faim shot dead in the restive northeast a year ago in a massacre Nordic truce monitors blamed on security forces. "There is a concern ... about the safety of humanitarian workers themselves and the record here is one of the worst in the world from that point of view," John Holmes, UN Under Secr…

  6. Sri Lankan markets bank on early military victory 6 hours ago COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka has downgraded its growth forecast for 2009 in line with a global meltdown, but the local markets are hoping a quick end to the drawn-out separatist war will restore confidence. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka said Friday it was revising GDP projections by a full percentage point to five percent in 2009 compared to the forecasted six percent in 2008, when fighting between troops and Tiger rebels escalated. But Geeth Balasuriya, of privately run HNB Stockbrokers, said the government's capture of the Tamil Tiger political capital Kilinochchi on Friday had made the market b…

  9. Colonel Douglas Macgregor sits down with Stephen Gardner for update on the Ukraine-Russia war. Is the war in Ukraine about to hit a turning point because I am starting to see groups like the Washington post and the New York Times finally tell the truth about the strength and condition of Ukraine’s army and the number of casualties they have suffered? Why do you say that Bakhmut has been like a meat grinder? And is it time for Ukraine to fall back, regroup, give themselves a couple days to build up ammunition, and then dig in and try and hold the line again? Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina says it’s time for the United States to get serious and show Russia who is …

We live in an age of strongman leaders whether it is in India, China or the US. And Sri Lanka has also elected such a leader as President. The emergence of strongman politics is a reflection of the contemporary global order, which is constituted by the geopolitics of tensions and negotiations, rather than an order determined by global rules and norms. However, it is not that the global order was ever committed to equality; historically, global rules and norms were always lopsided towards the powerful. The big powers chose the time and chance for exceptions as they impinged on their interests, and that is also why we have seen the many confli…

WHEN JOHN Britto, 19, saw No War Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka, a documentary produced by the UK-based Channel 4 exposing alleged war crimes by the Sri Lankan Army during the 2009 crackdown on the LTTE, he felt the need to protest against the atrocities. “I was shocked by images depicting the coldblooded killing of 12-year-old Balachandran, the son of the slain LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran,” says Britto, a student of Loyola College, Chennai. So when Britto and his friends saw the draft of the US-backed UN resolution on Sri Lanka, they were outraged by the mild language censuring the island nation, despite the UN itself claiming that more than 40,000 Tamil…

Here’s your chance to pose questions to a president about global issues. The world’s eyes are focusing on Sudan, which on Sunday will hold a referendum on independence in the southern part of the country. The south, which holds more than 75 percent of the country’s oil, is expected to vote almost unanimously for secession, and that will start a process that could lead to the birth of Africa’s newest country. In the past, there had been a good deal of fear that the referendum might lead to renewed warfare, but so far the process has gone better than many had expected. One of the observers monitoring the referendum on the ground is former President Jimmy Carter, w…
