On Sri Lanka Murder of 12 Year Old, Ban's UN is Aware, Calls for National Process As news of the summary execution of a 12 year old boy by the Sri Lankan Army in May 2009 spreads worldwide, Inner City Press on Wednesday asked UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's spokesman about it, citing Ban's “two reports and a third one still ongoing. Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky began with a correction, saying that this third report “is an internal task force looking at how recommendations will be carried out in the UN... it's not to do with looking into the actual events in Sri Lanka.” Some wonder how the UN can fully assess its inaction in Sri Lanka without taking in…

How Sri Lanka Became a Nation of Beggars Chandrasena Maliyadde on 01/05/2022 Photo courtesy of Asia Times Every economy in the world, developed or developing, is a topic for discussion today. Some economies are being discussed for their sound management, good governance, high growth and overcoming crises while other economies are being discussed for opposite reasons. Sri Lanka’s economy drifted gradually from the former category to the latter. The current government accelerated the process. Exceptionally low rank attached by all international rating agencies, rising foreign debt, gro…

David Cameron has defended his decision to attend the Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka, saying his duty was to "deal with, not ignore" controversial issues. In a statement to Parliament, the prime minister said a process of "justice, closure and healing" was needed in the country after decades of civil war. Sri Lanka must begin an inquiry into alleged war crimes by March or face international intervention, he said. But Ed Miliband said the UK government "could not let the matter rest". The Labour leader questioned whether Mr Cameron had been right to attend after a boycott by the Canadian and Indian leaders. He suggested the final communique of the sum…

I was born in Tamil Nadu and moved to America after my 1st birthday. Needless to say, I was your average American Tamil girl caught between two cultures. My parents, on one side, pressuring me into marriage. On the other side, I was trying to find myself, let alone somebody that I actually wanted to spend the rest of my life with). The older I got, the more I realized that marriage was not for me. “What?! A Tamil girl not getting married – what a ludicrous idea!” I could already hear my parents, uncles, and aunties losing their minds. My entire life goal was to make my parents proud, but I just couldn’t be tied down by marriage. I started living alone at the age of…

Today, November 10th, is International Accounting Day. A day to reflect on what it means to be an accountant and a great opportunity to honour all accountants. It is in honour of Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli, who published the first book about double-entry bookkeeping on November 10th 1494, that International Accounting Day started. His book described the use of journals and ledgers and warned that a person should not go to sleep at night until the debits equaled the credits. Luca Pacioli, “The Father of Modern Accounting” Therefore, each year on November 10th, we pay tribute to the work of Luca Pacioli, “The Father of Modern Accounting”. We also…

Cuba’s Contribution to Combatting COVID-19 by HELEN YAFFE Photograph Source: NatalieMaynor – CC BY 2.0 COVID-19 surged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late December 2019 and by January 2020 it had hit Hubei province like a tidal wave, swirling over China and rippling out overseas. The Chinese state rolled into action to combat the spread and care for those infected. Among the 30 medicines the Chinese National Health Commission selected to fight the virus was a Cuban anti-viral drug Interferon Alpha 2b. This drug has been produced in China since 2003, by the enterprise ChangHeber, a Cuban-Chinese joint venture.…

Catalonia held provincial elections on Sunday (November 25) at which the main issue was whether a referendum should be held within a few years to test if it should be independent from Spain and aspire for EU status as a separate nation. There are few parallels with a hypothetical Eelam scenario but secession issues anywhere in the world put everyone, on all sides, on the alert. Hence I will present here an analysis of the outcome and draw, but not overdraw parallels and anti-parallels with the Eelam hypothesis; more in respect of processes than outcomes. The number one difference of course is that there has been no civil war and no recitation of mutual hatred between Ca…

A popular Myanmar news website was blocked Thursday by hackers angry at its description of hardline Buddhist monks as “radical”, as the publication said it had received threats of violence over its coverage, the AFP news agency reported. The Irrawaddy saw its main English-language website briefly replaced with a black screen and notice accusing it of being pro-Muslim and slamming a blog it ran in Burmese about Myanmar nationalist cleric Wirathu’s weekend meeting with controversial Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist-majority countries have seen rising religious hate speech and attacks on minority Muslims, with some hardline monks accused of fann…

Foreign Minister John Baird has called in Sri Lanka’s high commissioner to Canada to discuss Canada’s “deep concern” with the country, according to his spokesperson. The country is facing growing pressure from all major parties in Canadian Parliament to improve its human rights record. But Sri Lankan High Commissioner Chitranganee Wagiswara argues that after an almost 30-year civil war, significant social change in the country is not a sprint—it’s a marathon. The parties are urging Sri Lanka to boost reconciliation between groups involved in the war. If the situation doesn’t improve, the parties have suggested Canada minimize (or fully stop) its participation in a h…

The destruction of the Mullivaikkal Memorial was an attempt by the Sri Lankan state to continue a cultural genocide, pretend the victims didn’t exist and rewrite history.
