Editor’s Note, 6 June 2021 (updated 01 March 2022): The bombing in Eastern Ukraine, known as the Donbass and Lughansk, has gone on for almost seven years, and began in the wake of the 2014 $5 billion U.S.-sponsored coup in Ukraine. International Chakkadaththaar [TamilNet, Tuesday, 02 October 2007, 13:38 GMT] The main reason why Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict couldn’t be resolved all these decades was that it was approached as a terrorist issue. The approach, which served the convenience and deceit of the Sinhala politicians, was endorsed by the world system, because everybody had skeletons in their cupboards. It was a general debility of international polity and political ideologies to resolve situations similar to that of Sri Lanka. As a result, the mainstream international system has led the world into an Age of Paranoia. The bigger the State, the bigger is the paranoia, writes Opinion Column…

  11. COLOMBO: There are indications that under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka will see India as its “main security provider” given India’s proximity and its status as the regional power. On the other hand, China will be seen as a key source of funds for big infrastructure projects, given its deep pocket and willingness to lend. Sources close to Gotabaya say that given neighboring India’s strategic concerns, and the stormy history of Sri Lanka-India relations, Gotabaya will not take China as a strategic ally but only as an important source of funds for the many large infrastructure projects he has in mind. Investments from India and other countries will also be w…

Thousands flee Jaffna expecting war PK Balachandran Colombo, January 15, 2006|21:45 IST About 3,500 families have fled from Jaffna peninsula to the LTTE-controlled part of the Wanni towards the south, expecting an outbreak of hostilities between the Sri Lankan armed forces and the LTTE, sources in Jaffna said on Sunday. The LTTE has been saying for sometime that the time has come for a "final push" to secure an independent Tamil Eelam by force because the Mahinda Rajapaksa government at Colombo and the international community, have turned a deaf ear to the Tamils' long-standing demands and taken a hostile posture. The LTTE had earlier asked…

  19. By Simon Gardner COLOMBO, Oct 20 (Reuters) - There is no way Sri Lanka's government will be able to crush its Tamil Tiger foes, and giving wide political autonomy to minority Tamils is the only answer, a leading European counter-terrorism expert says. With near daily land and sea clashes, ambushes, bombings and air raids amid a new chapter in a two-decade civil war that has killed around 70,000 people, the government is now taking the war to the rebels with offensives to drive them from territory they control. But the tactic is flawed and cannot solve an ethnic conflict that has killed around 5,000 people since early 2006 alone, said Dr. Gerard Chaliand, former …
