International uranium film fest from February 5

A three-day international uranium film festival is scheduled to be held here from February 5 to 7. Several documentaries on nuclear energy and Uranium will be screened during the festival at the Asian College of Journalism, Taramani, by the Chennai Solidarity Group for Koodankulam Struggle and Poovulagin Nanbargal.

Films such as Blowing in the Wind, Ashes to Honey: For Searching a Sustainable Feature and Buddha Weeps in Jadugoda, directed by David Bradbury, Hitomi Kamanaka and Shri Prakash respectively, will be screened.

David Bradbury, an Australian documentary film maker, who began his career as a journalist with ABC Radio, has produced and directed 21 films, of which many are on political issues. A two-time Academy Award winner, he made a film Public Enemy Number One on noted journalist Wilfred Burchett, the first western journalist, who made a visit to Hiroshima after it was bombed.

Bradbury was asked to leave India when he made a visit to Koodankulam last year to shoot anti-KKNPP struggle footages for his next film. His film on joint military training facility at Shoalwater Bay, titled Blowing in the Wind, will be screened at the film festival. The film highlights the health issues caused by the uranium surrounding the Bay.

Hitomi Kamanaka, a Japanese documentary film maker, whose film Radiation: A Slow Death, won Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs award. Her next film Rokkasho Rhapsody spoke about the problems related to Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant. Along with this, her most recent film Ashes to Honey portrayed the struggles of people against the construction of a nuclear plant. Yamaguchi Prefecture, which was released a month before the Fukushima disaster, is to be screened at the fest.

The only Indian film which will be screened at the film fest is Buddha Weeps in Jadugoda, directed by Shriprakash Prakash, known as Shri Prakash. The post-production funds for his films were raised by selling the CDs. His other works such as The Fire Within, In Whose Defence also grabbed the attention of many.

Apart from these, there are 16 other films, including Uranium Thirst, Deadly Dust, Radioactive Wolves, that will be screened.
