India's Sri Lanka policy - a projection Is India going to be pushed, prodded or propelled, in its policy towards Sri Lanka, down the very path that it took in the 1980s? Dayan JAYATILLEKA STANCE: The All India Bar Association (AIBA) has joined the raucous voices emanating from Tamil Nadu, calling for a more vigorous and one-sided policy on the part of New Delhi towards Colombo. While it goes against India's interest to be even handed between the LTTE, which perpetrated an act of foreign terrorism on its soil, and Sri Lanka, a friendly neighbour, voices such as that of the AIBA actually argue for a policy that is lopsided: against the Sri L…

The Coming of the Micro-states By Fred Weir, correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor, June 5, 2006 (Also, see below articles related to emerging states and comments by the EU and US.) From "The Coming of the Micro-states": Experts fear that many "frozen conflicts" around the world - in which a territory has gained de facto independence through war but failed to win international recognition - could reignite as ethnic minorities demand the same right to self-determination that many former Yugoslav territories have been offered by the international community. The United Nations Charter mentions both the right of "self-determination" of peoples a…

Travesty of our place names There is no reason why Colombo, Galle and Jaffna cannot revert to Kolamba, Gaalla and Yahapane, except that the political will to bring about such change is still missing How important the proper pronunciation and spelling can be to a nation’s identity was demonstrated by the French Government when it prohibited the use of the British word jet or ‘jetliner’ by the French. The punishment for transgression was imprisonment. After the law came into effect a jetliner had to be called ‘le grande porteur’. The rest of the world may pronounce the name of their capita…

Recognition of Regional parties Election commission has fixed certain condition for recognizing a new party as regional party. Vijaykanth party was unable to get recognition in this local body election because that party has only one MLA in the Assembly. Regional parties like MDMK and PMK have got recognition only after they have contested election as alliance with either DMK or ADMK. In this regard, the Election commission may amend the condition as a new party should satisfy the condition prescribed by the election commission by contesting the election as its own, without alliance with any major parties.
