I had a very productive week of meetings in Geneva at the 34th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Many people I have worked with since 2009 have moved onto different roles, however, it was great to catch up with those who still remain in Geneva. I was able to meet many new people and stakeholders who have a lifetime of work behind them, with inspiring stories of courage, conviction and success on key human rights issues and situations around the world. And as always, reconnecting with my colleagues and my many friends from around the world was always a delight. Despite its shortcomings, I have always felt that the UNHRC is a place where advocacy …

New DNA evidence is solving the most fought-over question in Indian history. And you will be surprised at how sure-footed the answer is, writes Tony Joseph The thorniest, most fought-over question in Indian history is slowly but surely getting answered: did Indo-European language speakers, who called themselves Aryans, stream into India sometime around 2,000 BC – 1,500 BC when the Indus Valley civilisation came to an end, bringing with them Sanskrit and a distinctive set of cultural practices? Genetic research based on an avalanche of new DNA evidence is making scientists around the world converge on an unambiguous answer: yes, they did. This may com…

Affiliating Trinco university campus with Anuradhapura: civil society calls for protest [TamilNet, Thursday, 18 July 2013, 12:33 GMT] In one of the worst moves of educational genocide of Eezham Tamils, efforts are now being undertaken to affiliate the Trincomalee Campus of the Eastern University with the Rajarata University of Anuradhapura, informed sources in Trincomalee told TamilNet on Thursday. The university-level educational institutions of Tamils in Jaffna and Batticaloa, started by the missionaries in the 19th century, became secondary schools when the British rule transferring power to the Sinhalese towards its closing days, encouraged only a Colombo-centric e…

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said her government will extend all help to the Centre to facilitate talks between Indian fishermen and their Sri Lankan counterparts in Chennai on January 20, 2014 to resolve the dispute over fishing rights in each other's territorial waters. She asked the Centre to reciprocate in a favorable manner. The frequent arrests of Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy for maritime violations have been a bone of contention between the Centre and the state and have also threatened to strain Indo-Lanka relations. In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the chief minister wanted the Centre to take firm steps to s…

By Nimal Vinayagamoorthy – Nimal Vinayagamoorthy The victory of President-elect Joe Biden as the 46th President of a long standing democracy and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, an accomplished woman sharing Tamil origins, has excited the human rights and democracy loving world. The Eelam Tamils have trod a careful path wondering if the new government can change their fate. One may recall, it was the Democrats under Barrack Obama who nailed Sri Lanka with successive resolutions from 2012 onwards at the UNHRC. After the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa in the Presidential elections of 2015, on October 1st USA co-sponsored resolution 30/1 with the so-ca…

Two US senators on Tuesday renewed calls for an international investigation into potential war crimes in Sri Lanka, accusing Colombo of failing to address legitimate concerns. Senators Patrick Leahy and Bob Casey, prominent voices on foreign policy in President Barack Obama's Democratic Party, said the island had failed to carry out recommendations from its own Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). "The Sri Lankan people deserve better. In fact, as the government of Sri Lanka fails to implement LLRC recommendations, the outlook for human and political rights in Sri Lanka appears to be getting worse," the senators wrote in a letter to outgoing Secretar…

Underscoring that presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa’s election manifesto is progressive on furthering democratic reforms, including key Tamil considerations such as continuing with the constitutional reform process, the Global Tamil Forum (GTF) urged the Tamil people in the Northern and Eastern Provinces and throughout Sri Lanka to freely exercise their franchise at the November 16 election. It said in a statement that SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s manifesto, on the other hand, has strong national security focus, but no serious commitment to expand the fledgling democratic space. “The refusal by all major presidential contestants to engage with Tamil…

China’s capabilities for naval force projection in the Indian Ocean are dependent on closer Sino-Sri Lankan relations, relations not benefitting India given long-standing Sino-Indian disputes. The Sino-Indo-Sri Lankan geostrategic relationship, in turn, is curiously dependent on the political influence of domestic Tamils in New Delhi. Tamils living in India, motivated by continuing animosities over Sri Lankan Tamil rights, are complicating New Delhi’s policies towards Colombo by narrowing India’s Sri Lanka foreign policy options. Hence, domestic political dynamics are compromising India’s ability to counter China’s deepening relationship with Sri Lanka, including the …

U.S. officials say President Donald Trump's long-awaited Middle East peace plan calls for the creation of a State of Palestine with its capital in portions of east Jerusalem, ending speculation as to whether his administration, in preparing a proposal without input from Palestinian leaders, would abandon a “two-state resolution" to the conflict. The officials say the plan to be unveiled on Tuesday more than doubles the territory currently under Palestinian control, although it also recognizes Israeli sovereignty over major settlement blocs in the West Bank, something to which the Palestinians will almost certainly object. The Palestinians have already rejected the pr…
