Tamil Diaspora dismayed by UN secretary General’s statement

Ban Ki Moon’s stereotype statements, blaming Liberation Tigers, shows his inability to persuade Sri Lanka for ceasefire, and has dismayed the Tamil Diaspora. The Tamil Diaspora, speaking to Tamil National said, his statements are purely based on Sri Lankan government reports; while he is quick to blame Liberation Tigers when independent media has no access for free reporting, he refuses to officially release the casualty figures blaming it on unconfirmed reports.

Tamil Diaspora rejects Ban’s statement and said, none of his reports mentioned about the missing and abused people who came into the government controlled area. In his latest statement, he has softened his stance towards Sri Lanka and omitted the call for ceasefire, this may lead to a hard approach by Sri Lankan government, fears Tamil Diaspora."The severe restrictions of the LTTE on their freedom of movement violate international law,” Ban's statement said, while the situation is that those people who came into government control have been put into detention camps against their will, not only fully restricted from movement but lost all kinds freedom, freedom to express, freedom to live, the Tamil Diaspora expressed their anger.

At the screening process by Sri Lankan Military, the displaced undergo many agonies. Disappearance of youths at the screening point has been reported many a times. Government’s repeated claims on the number of civilians in the LTTE territory are as very low as 50,000 to 70,000, whereas the estimate by Additional Government Agent of Mullaitivu is in the range of 300,000. The UN document put the number of internally displaced people in Mullaitivu at 150,000 to 190,000, and says that the International Committee of the Red Cross agrees. The UN then dryly telling, "70,000 is the number of IDPs in Mullaitivu according to the Government of Sri Lanka." The Sri Lankan government in fact contests any numbers, and most statements, put out by the UN. The concerned Tamil Diaspora fears that the government is purposefully hiding the actual figures to do ethnic cleansing without evidence. Why can’t UN make arrangements to place UN officials from the first point of screening?

The Tamil Diaspora says, they expects UN to call for an immediate cease-fire between the Sri Lankan Forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and in the meantime, to arrange to send diplomatic personnel, non-government agencies and independent journalists, to the affected areas, so that urgent relief could be provided and there could be a true and independent disclosure and assessment of the prevailing situation.
