Sri Lanka rewards its man in Chennai with London posting

CHENNAI: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa is turning Santa Claus, rewarding his men who fought the war against the LTTE, whether on the battle front or from behind the scenes. PM Amza, who is Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai, has been posted to London.

He is waiting for his orders and is likely to leave soon to take on the new post of deputy high commissioner in the London office.

The posting is seen as a reward for weathering the storm during the final phase of the war against the LTTE when there were innumerable protests in Tamil Nadu and political pressure from the state on New Delhi to intervene and stop the war. Amza served during the three sensitive years of Eelam war IV when the Lankan army scored several battlefield victories and was accused of large-scale civilian deaths.

Amza's three-year tenure coincided with the period when hostilities peaked in Sri Lanka and pro-Eelam groups in Chennai grew more strident by the day, accusing the Sri Lankan government of perpetrating atrocities against the Tamils.

During this period, Tamil Nadu also saw several protests against the Sri Lankan government for pursuing the military offensive and allegedly firing at Tamil Nadu fishermen.

Chennai was considered a sensitive posting for Sri Lankan diplomats in the wake of the war against the LTTE and the pro-Eelam sentiments in Tamil Nadu. Though Amza's transfer orders were cleared in August

last year, he was asked to wait as the Sri Lankan Government stepped up its offensive against the LTTE. Before taking charge in Chennai, Amza was the chief of protocol in Colombo.

Diplomatic sources said Amza has been given additional perks and sops. The new deputy high commissioner in Chennai is yet to be announced. Sources said three top diplomats have been shortlisted for the post and the approval is awaited from Temple Trees, the official residence of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Colombo.
