Yes, it's Toronto the good

Local group raising cash to help relief efforts in war-torn Sri Lanka

A Toronto group is looking to raise cash for the humanitarian relief effort in Sri Lanka.

Thousands of people in the war-torn country are in dire need of medical help and fresh water and next Saturday a fundraiser will be held in Markham to get the word out, said Ajantha Ganesh, who is one of those leading the charge for financial help.

"We want this to be a non-political effort," Ganesh said. "We were looking for a way to help out with the humanitarian crisis over there and all the people who are in the displacement camps and there seems to be a shortage of food, shelter, fresh water and medical aid."

The group has linked up with the Toronto disaster relief group GlobalMedic because they have already been working in Sri Lanaka and have the connections to get help to the people who need it.

"We have access to the north," GlobalMedic's Wes Normington said. "Access is limited to that area but through our partner organizations we can get the equipment where it is needed."

The group has two inflatable field hospitals already operating in the north, he said.

1,300 PATIENTS A DAY

"They're treating, on average, 1,300 patients day for everything from the main problems of dehydration and diarrhea to minor injuries that don't require surgery," Normington said. GlobalMedic had people in Sri Lanka as recently as March, including Sgt. Don Ryan, a 34-year veteran with Toronto Police.

"There were some roadblocks but at least we know the help was eventually getting to where it was needed," Ryan said of his recent trip -- his ninth GlobalMedic mission. "And people there were willing to learn how to help themselves and that helps a lot, too."

Along with the field hospitals, the major need is for clean water, Normington said. The group has also brought water purification equipment into the country and trained Sri Lankans on how to use it.

Fellow fundraiser Dhimo Lad said the goal is $100,000 and to reach that amount they are appealing to all Canadians -- whether they are of Sri Lankan descent or not -- to come out to the J & J Swagat banquet hall at 415 Hood Rd. near Warden and Steeles Aves. between 4 and 7 p.m.

"There's not a lot we can do here in Canada," Lad said. "But the one thing we can do is give GlobalMedic money and we know that money is going to go towards helping with the humanitarian effort."
