Police evict Tamils from Colombo (BBC World News) Police in Sri Lanka have forced hundreds of the minority Tamil community out of the capital Colombo for what they say are security reasons. They launched overnight raids in Tamil areas of the city and forced guests staying in budget hotels onto buses. Police said that Tamils who were in the capital "without valid reasons" were made to board buses bound for the north and east of the island. Police said that the move was necessary amid fears of renewed civil war. 'Bad example' They say that the crackdown is part of continuing efforts to stop the Tamil Tigers infiltrating the city of 600,000…

People in Batticaloa are voting in the first polls since the government drove the Tamil Tigers from eastern Sri Lanka. The elections are for a municipal council and smaller local authorities in outlying areas. But the party that is expected to win - the Tamileela Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal party (TMVP) - is made up of former Tamil Tiger rebels, and they have not laid down their arms. Pradeep Master is a leading candidate for political office, standing in Batticaloa's local polls for the TMVP. During the campaign he was out on the streets visiting shops and handing pamphlets to passers-by. But at the age of 16, he was carrying an AK-47 for the …

The incident, apparently caused by a short circuit, took place in Gudabiya area when there were 218 people in the camp, mostly Indians. However, workers claimed that there were over 350 Indians in the building. The seven injured were being treated in a hospital for burns they received in the fire. Indian Ambassador to Bahrain Balakrishan Shetty said that most of the 16 workers killed were from Tamil …

What the European Court of Justice (ECJ) proves implicitly is that under European Law, you do not need evidence to classify a group as a ‘terrorist’ organisation, commented US-based Eezham Tamil legal activist, Mr Rajeev Sreetharan, who was one of the initiators of the LTTE vs EU case adjudged by the ECJ on Thursday. However, he added that the ECJ ruling, although tainted by questionable post 9/11 interpretations of international humanitarian law, in essence vindicates assumptions in deciding to challenge the EU ban of the LTTE in a court of law, rather than the halls of government. Rajeev was hopeful that the lifting of the ‘terrorism’ ban helps to begin reshape the Euro…

Sri Lanka woos Jaya: India In The ‘Killing Fields Of Sri Lanka’ sam rajappa THE Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India, Prasad Kariyawasam, now in Colombo for consultations, has sought an appointment with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalitha, in Chennai to extend to her a personal invitation from President Mahinda Rajapaksa to visit Sri Lanka. In its attempt to pamper Rajapaksa to serve the agenda of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, India had betrayed the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils who have been struggling for equal rights with the majority Sinhalese. While the DMK, an important constituent of the UPA, remained passive content with amassing wealth, even as In…

Sinhala regime playing role similar to Israel By: Dr.Vickramabahu Karunaratne Courtesy: LakBima News - November 11, 2007 Rajpal of Lakbimanews says "I was the editor of a Lake House newspaper. The moment I started carrying stories about the abductions of Tamils in Colombo, while also front paging the success of the forces in the war front, they threw me out of my job. Of course Tamils are not people under Rajapaksa. If you talk about them as if they were people, you would be out of your job. That is nothing though. If you are Tamil- you could lose your life too, but who cares? Which son of a bishop says Chickera is wrong?" It is a heroic statement. …

Sri Lanka government gains support of Buddhist monks By Somini Sengupta Published: February 23, 2007 E COLOMBO: With full-scale war blossoming once more in a country beset by a quarter century of ethnic conflict, an ever more assertive government has found a sturdy ally in what might seem an unexpected source: hard-line Buddhist monks. The monks have long been active in Sri Lanka's deeply polarized politics, but for the first time they have joined the governing coalition with their own political party. Called the Jathika Hela Urumaya, or National Heritage Party, they now hold 9 seats in Sri Lanka's 225-member Parliament. The party sits at the extreme …

Monday, May 19th marks the five-year anniversary of the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war, which claimed the lives of 40,000 to 70,000 civilians in its “catastrophic” final phase. In 2009, Congress asked the State Department to report on the humanitarian law violations during the war, and those reports make for gruesome reading. If history is a guide, this week congressional representatives will publicly call for accountability for war crimes in Sri Lanka—as members of Congress have done on the past four anniversaries. (See accompanying post, “Honor Roll of US Congressional Members Who’ve Stood for Accountability in Sri Lanka”) This post proposes specific action that cong…

சுதந்திரம், அபிவிருத்தி, தன்னம்பிக்கை கொண்ட தன்னிறைவு DEVELOPED INDIA Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The President of India I have three visions for India. In 3000 years of our history, people from all over the world have come and invaded us, captured our lands, conquered our minds. From Alexander onwards. The Greeks, the Turks, the Moguls, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Dutch, all of them came and looted us, took over what was ours. Yet we have not done this to any other nation. We have not conquered anyone. We have not grabbed their land, their culture, their history and tried to enforce our way of life on them. Why? Because we respect the…

The Sri Lankan State & fascist media of the South has been systematically intimidating the SLMM and other international non-governmental organizations like the World Bank to toe their line through hate campaign, unethical reporting and misquoting from the original sources. Sri Lankan state media takes SLMM and their spokeswoman for an abusive ride in the name of "a special meeting organized by the Daily News".The news piece appeared on the 9th of June 2006 Daily News is a fine example of the state media's pathetic spin doctoring stunts. The alleged claims by Helen Olafsdottir such as "we will monitor it from Kandy if we have to" and that CFA is yet to become inv…

Origins of Remembrance Day Why is this day special to Australians? At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became un…

Tamil Tigers in Britain Burning less bright? Jun 12th 2008 From The Economist print edition Lean times for the Sri Lankan separatists. But Tamils are flourishing TERRORISM normally makes front-page news in Britain, so it was odd that the four Asian men charged with terrorist offences last month scarcely made the papers. The charge-sheet explains why: the men bundled out of their homes at dawn are suspected of procuring equipment for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a rebel group that has fought a decades-long civil war against the Sri Lankan state and is now banned in Britain. The police took pains to emphasise that there was no link to al-Qaeda; afte…
