17 November 2013 The international community must keep up pressure on the Sri Lankan government to address its human rights crisis, Amnesty International said as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo draws to a close. “Sri Lanka may well regret having hosted the Commonwealth summit which has proved a PR disaster for the government. Most of the focus has rightly been on the country’s appalling human rights record," Steve Crawshaw, Director of the Office of the Secretary General at Amnesty International, said from Colombo. “The challenge for the international community is now to keep up the pressure on the Sri Lankan government. Those r…

On February 26th, Conservative Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism and Canada-China relations Garnett Genuis challenged Prime Minister Trudeau to follow through on his promises to the Tamil community to address pressing human rights issues in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately the Prime Minister did not answer the question and has failed to take any concrete action to address the deteriorating human rights situation. [TamilNet, Thursday, 03 October 2013, 23:38 GMT] The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) should learn from history, and from the experience of their predecessors, on what should NOT be done, writes Tamil Nadu political activist Poonkuzhali Nedumaran in a feature sent to TamilNet this week. She cited the history of TNA’s predecessor TULF failing in upholding the responsibility it was vested with by the people in 1977, compromising with District Councils and how that triggered the Tamil youth to lose confidence in parliamentary methods. The NPC election results mean communication of a will than participation in governance. With the Eezham Tamils rejecting the polity and rule of …

THE men untangling nets in Akkaraipettai harbour, in Tamil Nadu, southern India, know how to ease growing tension with Sri Lanka: scrap the international frontier. “You can’t put a border on air, so how can you do it on water?” says the leader of a fishermen’s union. In any case, trawlermen pay it little heed. Their frequent clashes with Sri Lanka’s navy are part of a serious and widening quarrel between the neighbours. Waters on the Indian side of the narrow Palk Strait are fished-out and polluted. So 600-800 trawlers venture daily to Sri Lanka. Fishermen in Akkaraipettai cheerily admit to trespass, and confess that some of them carry out destructive and illegal “bot…

The Occupation of Water The legacy of Israel’s 50-year occupation of the Palestinian territories has been systematic human rights violations on a mass scale. One of its most devastating consequences is the impact of Israel’s discriminatory policies on Palestinians’ access to adequate supplies of clean and safe water. Soon after Israel occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, in June 1967, the Israeli military authorities consolidated complete power over all water resources and water-related infrastructure in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). 50 years on, Israel continues to control and restrict Palest…

Will the Tamils Lose the Plot Again? Photo courtesy Christian Science Monitor Chaos and Fear Much has happened in the space of three months. Soon after the Eastern Provincial Council election came the Divi Neguma bill and the subsequent calls for the abolition of the 13th Amendment. The impeachment motion against the Chief Justice and the recruitment of Tamil women to the military followed before the Maveerar Naal (Heroes’ Day) incidents in Jaffna. It would seem that the government is bent on creating chaos and fear. It seems parties interested in Sri Lanka signing the Acquisition and Cross Services Agreement (ACSA) with the U.S., were keen on Sri Lankan troops learning human rights ironically, from another military known for grave violations of human rights. Political column of Sri Lanka’s popular English weekly, Sunday Times alleges it was then Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and then Foreign Secretary Prasad Kariyawasam who had pressured then Defense Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi, to expedite the passage of ACSA. The column goes on to note that apart from services facilities being granted to US troops who will visit Sri Lanka, one of the other elements included in th…

Both locations will receive a $2.5 billion investment from Amazon, and each will have more than 25,000 workers over time. Hiring begins next year. Sri Lankan civil war Full and equal membership of a political community is called citizenship. Citizenship is not merely a legal concept. It is also closely related to larger notion of equality and rights. In modern times it shows the relationship between state and its members. Equality of rights and status is one of the basic right of citizenship. As T.H.Marshall mentioned in his book "CITIZENSHIP AND SOCIAL CLASS" a status bestowed on those who are full members of a community. All who possess the status are equal with respect to the rights and duties with which the status is endowed. In a democracy there is a huge role of protest and struggle in achieving ri…
