இங்கிலாந்தில் ரோமானிய கலாச்சாரத்துடன் கூடிய பழமையான தியேட்டர் ஒன்று மண்ணில் புதைந்திருந்ததை தொல்லியல் துறையினர் கண்டுபிடித்துள்ளனர். இந்த தியேட்டர் சுமார் 2000 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையானது என்பதால், சரித்திர முக்கியத்துவம் பெற்றுள்ளது.

பிரிட்டனில் உள்ள தொல்லியல் துறையில் பணிபுரியும் Dr Paul Wilkinson என்பவர், Faversham, Kent பகுதியில்  தொல்லியல் துறை பள்ளி ஒன்றை நடத்தி வருகின்றார். இந்த பள்ளியின் பின்புறம் ஒரு தோட்டம் உள்ளது. அந்த தோட்டத்தில் இவரது மாணவர்கள் ஆராய்ச்சி செய்து கொண்டிருந்தபோது, மிகபெரிய தியேட்டர் ஒன்று மண்ணில் புதைந்துள்ளதை கண்டுபிடித்துள்ளனர். இது பிரிட்டனிலே கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்ட முதலாவது தொன்மையான கட்டிடம் ஆகும்.

 

 

 

ரோமானிய கலாசாரத்துடன் வட்ட வடிவில் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ள இந்த தியேட்டர், 12,000 மக்கள் உட்கார்ந்து பார்க்கக்கூடிய வகையில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. பின்னாளில் ஏற்பட்ட நாகரீக தியேட்டர்களுக்கு முன்னோடியாக இருந்துள்ளதாக அறிய முடிகிறது. Dr Paul Wilkinson, செய்தியாளர்களிடம் தெரிவித்த போது, "இதுபோன்ற ஒரு பழமையான தியேட்டர் இதுவரை பிரிட்டனில் எங்குமே கண்டுபிடிக்கப்படவில்லை. அத்தகைய ஒரு கட்டிடம் எனது தோட்டத்தில் கிடைத்ததை மிகவும் பெருமையாக கருதுகிறேன். இது எனக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, பிரிட்டன் நாட்டிற்கே ஒரு பெருமையாகும். தொல்லியல் துறை மூலமாக இந்த இடத்தை மேலும் ஆராய்ச்சி செய்ய தான் விரும்புவதாகவும் தெரிவித்தார்.

Scuse me DM Bronze age??????. The Roman sword was the Gladius, and made of fine carbon steel. It was, at the time of the republic, even before the conquest of Britain by Claudius, the weapon all feared. Steel is iron, with a small percentage of carbon, not bronze. In other words DM get your facts right. Bronze age, forsooth. I suggest Ali reads the article, there is no suggestion that this is a bronze age roman theatre just that there is evidence of bronze age activity as well as the roman theatre.

If this is not made a national monument, then we really have lost our way. It is am amazing to think that it held 12000 people, about the size of a modern sports stadium - brummiewsller, Spokane USA, 25/12/2012 19:16 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Colchester in North Essex which was called Camulodunum (which is also the oldest recorded town in Britain), boasts the only Roman Circus to be discovered in the UK. It also has a Roman theatre which was discovered several years ago at Gosbecks Park just outside othe the modern town centre (you can see it clearly on Google Earth). The biggest problem is trying to get these places listed as sites of national heritage when there isn't money available. Colchester has repeatedly missed out on the opportunities to turn their finds into tourist cash, so they just bury the sites again and erect a sign telling of what's beneath the ground.
