Military says Sri Lankan patrol escapes roadside bomb attack

A military patrol escaped a roadside bomb attack in northern Sri Lanka, the Defense Ministry said Thursday. The patrol retaliated, killing one rebel.

Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said the attack occurred in Vavuniya on Wednesday night and was launched by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE. The group is fighting to create a separate homeland for Sri Lanka's 3.1 million Tamils, accusing the majority Sinhalese of discrimination.

He said soldiers found the body of a rebel, along with ammunition and two bombs and cord often used to detonate them.

In a separate incident in Jaffna Peninsula north of Vavuniya, the military found four T-56 rifles, a 10-kilo (22-pound) bomb and three hand grenades at two separate hiding places on Wednesday, Samarasinghe said.

Sri Lanka's two-decade civil war stopped in 2002 when Norway brokered a cease-fire, but that truce has come under serious threat due to almost daily violence. This year, more than 3,500 combatants and civilians have been killed in violence, according to the Defense Ministry.
