Tamils call for sanctions

BY JAMES MASSOLA

14/01/2009 1:00:00 AM

The Canberra-based chairman of a leading Tamil group in Australia, Sittampalam Ragavan, has urged Foreign Minister Stephen Smith to consider imposing sanctions on the Sri Lankan Government.

Mr Ragavan's call comes after the assassination of Australian permanent resident Lasantha Wickramatunga, 52, last week.

Wickramatunga, editor of the Sunday Leader newspaper and a critic of the Government, was shot as he sat in his car in peak-hour traffic in the capital Colombo.

Amnesty International said last November that at least 10 media employees had been killed in Sri Lanka since 2006.

Mr Smith expressed his concern over the murder, saying there had been an increase in ''disturbing'' attacks on media outlets.

''We're very much concerned over what appears to be systematic efforts against media in Sri Lanka,'' Mr Smith said.

He had expressed condolences to MrWickramatunga's family on behalf of the Government.

The Reporters Without Borders group has said the Sri Lankan Government was ''directly to blame'' for the fatal shooting of MrWickramatunga.

''President Mahinda Rajapakse, his associates and the Government media are directly to blame because they incited hatred against him and allowed an outrageous level of impunity to develop as regards violence against the press,'' the organisation said in a statement.

The Government has condemned the killing and the President asked the police to speedily investigate while the main opposition said they had no faith in the police and demanded an international probe. with AAP, AFP
