Dear Madam/Sir,

re: 20 year sentence to journalist

Despite the concerns from reputed rights organizations such as HRW, Amnesty, RSF, ACHRC, and many other local and international aid groups, Sri Lanka shamefully used antiterrorism laws to silence peaceful critics in the media. Mr. J.S. Tissainayagam, a senior journalist and Sunday Times columnist has been indicted under the notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and Emergency Regulations (ER), and was charged on three counts including printing and distributing the publication North Eastern Herald Monthly magazine.

The US President, Obama, mentioned Tissainayagam in his May 1, 2009 World Press Freedom day statement describing him as an "emblematic example" of a journalist who was being persecuted for doing his work.

The Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism announced by the Paris-based press rights group Reporters Without Borders (RSF), today and said. "J.S. Tissainayagam is one of those and should never have been imprisoned.

RSF said, Sri Lanka needs journalists who are determined and concerned with finding the truth. Rights activist and lawyer Nimalka Fernando said the High Court ruling was a direct assault on freedom of expression in Sri Lanka and slammed the judicial system for stifling the media.

A leading anti-establishment editor, Lasantha Wickrematunga, was shot dead near his office in January. Several others have escaped assassination. At least 27 assaulted in the past three years while activists say over a dozen journalists have been killed by the Sri Lankan forces and paramilitary men.

Sri Lanka, under the name of sovereign democratic nation should not be allowed to attack, assault, harass and continue to kill numerous journalists and media/aid workers.

Sri Lanka also should not be allowed to continue with oppressing Tamils. Peaceful and just solution to the long suffering Tamils in Sri Lanka must be found very quickly by the international governments including the powerful western nations.

Thank you for your kind attention on this matter.

Yours truly,
