‘KUALA LUMPUR : Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should not set foot on Malaysian soil because he is a “traitor”, said a non-government organisation.

According to little-known Malaysia Consumer Advisory Association’s M Varatharajoo, this was because the Indian government had played a role in the killings of 80,000 ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka a year ago.

He said the Malaysian government should not have invited Manmohan to come here. The Indian premier is slated to arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 27. He is also scheduled to officially open the new-look Brickfields area – which is to be rebranded as Little India.

Varatharajoo said India also helped Sri Lanka escape disciplinary action from the United Nations over the crimes committed against the Tamils there.

“The Indian government led by Manmohan never paid attention to the problems of Indians around the world. He is not eligible to step into Malaysia because he is a traitor to the Tamil community worldwide,” he added.

HRP wants scholarships

In a related development, the Human Rights Party (HRP) planned to hand a memorandum to Manmohan asking the Indian government to provide higher education scholarships for needy Malaysian Indian students.

“We want to make this request because we feel this is the right situation to showcase the plight faced by Indian students here, who are denied access to higher education due to the quota system practised by the Malaysian government,” HRP protem secretary P Uthayakumar told FMT.

He said the party needed merely 30 minutes to meet the Indian premier but if this request could not be entertained, HRP would be happy to talk to a representative of Manmohan.

Uthayakumar said the party placed emphasis on education as it felt that there was a dire need for intellectual promotion among Malaysian Indian students as higher education opportunities in Malaysia were denied to them, except for excellent students who score good grades in their STPM exams.

He also said presently bright Indian Malaysian students were systematically denied opportunities for scholarship and a place at public universities by the government.

This, he claimed, was direct result of the racially discriminatory policies implemented by the Malaysian government.

He added the issue was not only significant to Malaysian Indians but also for the manpower and politico-strategic implications for Indian businesses intending to invest in Malaysia, as trade between the two nations accelerates with the conclusion of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement between Malaysia and India.
