U.S. State Department: Sri Lanka should heed UN expert advice

Featured Replies

Daya Gamage – US National Correspondent Asian Tribune

Washington, DC. 20 April (Asiantribune.com):

The United States Department of State, the foreign policy/relations agency of the Obama administration, is of the opinion that the ‘War Crimes’ report of UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon panel is helpful to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka should take advantage of the contents of the UN report to complete what that country has undertaken referring to the Sri Lanka president-appointed Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

In fact, the State Department thinks that Si Lanka should consider what the UN’s panel of experts has to offer.

The State Department also notes that the Government of Sri Lanka has taken steps to address accountability, referring to the events that took place during the final stages (Jan-May 2009) of the military battle with the separatist Tamil Tigers.

These official State Department sentiments were expressed by its acting spokesman Mark C. Toner at the daily media briefing at the department Tuesday, 19 April.

This was the first reaction of the State Department asking the Government of Sri Lanka to take heed of the ‘expert advice’ of the Ban panel indirectly telling Sri Lanka not to dismiss the contents of the UN report.
