Sack The Political Thug! The year 2007 ended for the country in a tragicomedy. Tragic it was because the scenes at the Rupavahini studios on Thursday involving a minister of state accompanied by his 'bodyguard' - a double murder suspect released on bail - was a disgrace to any self-respecting nation, particularly one which boasts of an ancient civilisation and culture. The comedy was that the pint-sized comedian and his bodyguard were served their just desserts however unpalatable it may have been by the staff of the government's main propaganda institution which has the most trusted personnel of the ruling party. While violence in any form cannot be condoned …

ecretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says that each time he meets the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka she asked him why he had not taken steps to punish Sri Lankan soldiers. Speaking at a presentation ceremony at the National Chamber of Commerce yesterday Rajapaksa said that he always responds to Ambassador Michele Sison that soldiers cannot be punished without due procedure being followed. The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence referred to remarks made by Ambassador Sison in Matara on Wednesday when he claimed she criticized the impeachment process against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. “The biggest threat the US can pose to Sri Lanka’s…

Three IT professionals from Tamil Nadu are camping in New Delhi, trying to knock on the corridors of power to impress upon the government to stop playing second fiddle on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue and vote in favour of the US-sponsored United Nations Human Rights Council resolution. Sheela Bhatt reports "Do you know thousands of students from over 200 Tamil educational institutions are protesting against Sri Lanka's ill-treatment of ethnic Tamils since the last many weeks?" "Do you know that thousands of students are on a token fast today (Thursday) across Tamil Nadu to put pressure on the UPA government in New Delhi to vote in favour of the US-sponsored United…

How do I love thee, tree? Let me count the ways; you change carbon dioxide into the oxygen we breathe, you sequester carbon, and you provide shelter for countless critters. There are many reasons for which we should all be tree-hugging hippies, but within the scope of this article, all we’ll focus on is how amazing some of them look. Granted, not all of these amazing beautiful trees are trees (the Wisteria is a vine, Rhododendrons are shrubs, and bamboo technically belongs to the grass family), but we’ll give them a pass because they are amazing, huge and beautiful. So once you step outside and take a breath of fresh air, hug the nearest tree and say thank you! If you…

[TamilNet, Thursday, 03 October 2013, 23:38 GMT] The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) should learn from history, and from the experience of their predecessors, on what should NOT be done, writes Tamil Nadu political activist Poonkuzhali Nedumaran in a feature sent to TamilNet this week. She cited the history of TNA’s predecessor TULF failing in upholding the responsibility it was vested with by the people in 1977, compromising with District Councils and how that triggered the Tamil youth to lose confidence in parliamentary methods. The NPC election results mean communication of a will than participation in governance. With the Eezham Tamils rejecting the polity and rule of …

AT 8 A.M. on December 11, 2015, Rosemarie Junor walked through the doors of Medcan, the private medical clinic at York and Adelaide where she worked. As always, her makeup and nail polish were perfectly applied, her dark hair carefully styled. Junor was the youngest of four children born to immigrant parents—her father was Trinidadian, her mother Guyanese—and she was the family’s high achiever. She had started at Medcan in 2011 as a secretary; three years later, she was promoted to co-ordinator of an ultrasound test that screens for early signs of plaque buildup in the carotid artery, the only employee qualified to operate the machine. Junor cared deeply about her work. S…

In May 2009, as the civil war was drawing to a close, the Sri Lankan executed influential Tamil leaders even though they had already surrendered. Frances Harrison spoke to two Tamil fighters who witnessed the incident and revealed the atrocity to the world. The stocky Tamil man twisted himself nervously inside his thin black anorak, ill suited to one of the iciest days of winter, as he explained how he turned informer, betraying the very man he was supposed to protect, in order to save his own life. We endured the bone-chilling cold sitting outdoors on a deserted verandah sipping coffee in a café in Victoria Station, interrupted occasionally by the peremptory platform …

Around the world events are being held to demand that the Sri Lankan government free displaced persons being held in detention camps, and allow them to go back to their homes. November 21st marks 180 days after the Government of Sri Lanka pledged that the refugees would be resettled within 180 days. Yet tens of thousands of Tamils families are languishing in camps with no sign of repatriation. Amnesty International released a report in August entitled “Unlock the Camps”. The LTTE defense spokesperson Ilanthirayan speaking about the allegations made by the Government of Sri Lanka re the two bomb blasts on Friday and Saturday said, “Government of Sri Lanka is trying to blame the LTTE for the two bomb blasts in the south of the island on Friday and Saturday. This is a baseless allegation made without any evidence to support it. GoSL attempt at blaming the LTTE is aimed at discrediting the LTTE”. “This is a feeble attempt by the GoSL which stands accused of horrendous and repeated crimes against humanity carried out against the Tamil people in the Tamil homeland”, Ilanthirayan added.

World Bank population data from Sri Lanka indicates up to a hundred thousand Tamils are unaccounted for after the final war against the Tamil Tiger rebels in 2009, raising questions about whether they could be dead. A UN report cited a death toll of forty thousand for the climax of the war in 2009 but a UN internal inquiry last month acknowledged for the first time that up to seventy thousand civilian deaths were possible. The leaked World Bank spreadsheets broken down by village for the north of the island estimate numbers of returnees to the former conflict area in mid 2010. The Bank also cites Statistical Handbook Numbers for population in 2007 - before the fighting …

Publishing a book about a highly charged ethnic conflict in which tens of thousands have died is no path to a peaceful life. You only need to look at the racial abuse and filthy language in the comments sections of online sites frequented by Sri Lankans to see how intense the emotions still are. Like anyone who writes on Sri Lanka I’ve had my share of abuse from both sides. I’ve been told I am covered in the blood of the babies who perished in the killing fields, that I’ve been making money out of the dead, and am a terrorist or “white Tiger” not to mention, a hysterical liar. But what the public doesn’t see are the private messages from readers around the world. Ev…

New Delhi The day Sri Lanka backed out of the joint partnership with India and Japan for the much-hyped East Container Terminal (ECT) project at Colombo port, a move that shocked both New Delhi and Tokyo, Sri Lanka’s Central Bank (CBSL) also returned the US $400 million currency swap to India, foreclosing a key debt, IBN reported. Sri Lanka had availed this facility in July 2020 to meet some immediate expenses during the Covid-induced lockdown. However, both the nations kept quiet about it. After a section of the media and opposition politicians started talking about a “pissed off” India asking Sri Lanka to return its money, Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL)…

25 December 2013 Simranjit Singh Mann “Tamils can’t live [in a united Sri Lanka] after the perpetration of the crime of genocide. I think the wounds are too deep historically there to be reconciliation. After a State has committed genocide, there can’t be any reconciliation,” says Simranjit Singh Mann, the president of Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar party, who advocates the formation of Khalistan as an independent and sovereign State for Sikhs, in an exchange of views with Tamil Nadu based May 17 Movement. “Pirapaharan and his movement was too powerful for the Sri Lankan government,” he said, adding that “it was under the collaboration of UPA-led Congress go…
