No “outside force”, including India, played any role in Sri Lankan presidential Elections that saw the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa, says Chandrika Bandarnaike Kumaratunga. Ms. Kumaratunga, who is in India as the representative of the Sri Lankan government to attend the Hindu-Buddhist conclave held in Bodh Gaya also denied allegations by Mr. Rajapaksa and international agency reports that the RAW had supplied DRDO-made telephones to her in order to allow her to communicate with then-presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena. “We were using Viber. And the government didn’t know how to tap Viber. Sri Lanka didn’t have that technology, otherwise we would have all been …

United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPF) member of Parliament and Government Minister S B Dissanayake today blamed former President Mahinda Rajapaksa for the loss suffered by the UPFA at the last election. Dissanayake said that Rajapaksa should not have contested the Parliamentary election which the UPFA eventually lost by a slim margin. He noted that Rajapaksa failed to get the full support of the Muslims, Tamils and Catholics. The Minister, speaking to reporters in Kandy today, said that if President Maithripala Sirisena led the UPFA campaign instead of Rajapaksa the UPFA would have secured more votes and regained the votes it lost even at the Presidential election. …

12 surprisingly high-paying part-time jobs Making ends meet can be difficult, even with full-time work, particularly if you live in a big, expensive city like Toronto or Vancouver. Time magazine has just published a list of part time jobs “that pay lots of money,” something we have also done in the past, so we thought we would revisit the topic by sharing a couple from Time’s list (to be honest, some of their jobs don’t actually pay all that well) along with our own previous list, to give you a veritable cornucopia of part-time job options. Maybe your hours have been cut, or maybe your bills are already covered but you want more cash for vacations, shoes and ga…

Supporters of former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa have their eyes set on the upcoming parliamentary elections, hoping to bring him back into Sri Lankan politics, a move that could pose a serious challenge to new President Maithripala Sirisena’s agenda for democratic reforms. Rajapaksa, who oversaw a military victory over Tamil Tiger guerrillas six years ago, but at the cost of the lives of more than 70,000 civilians, as the United Nations noted in a report, was dramatically defeated by his one-time ally, Sirisena, in last month’s presidential election. But Rajapaksa is not giving up yet. “What we are experiencing today is not a defeat but a result of a c…

New President in Sri Lanka Puts China’s Plans in Check NEW DELHI — On a Sunday four months ago, a vessel pulled unannounced intoSri Lanka’s Colombo harbor: the Chinese Navy submarine Great Wall No. 329, which is designed to carry torpedoes, a cruise missile and a 360-pound warhead. Sri Lanka’s defense minister shrugged it off as an “operational good-will visit.” But anxiety was already radiating as far as New Delhi, where the visit was seen as a clear declaration that China had arrived in India’s backyard — with the blessing of Sri Lanka’s president at the time, Mahinda Rajapaksa. Whatever China’s long-term plans were for strategically important Sr…
