The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy warship HAI YANG 24 HAO arrived at the port of Colombo on a formal visit this morning, the Navy said. The 129m long ship which arrived in Colombo is manned by a crew of 138 and it is commanded by Commander Jin Xin. Meanwhile, the ship is scheduled to depart the island on August 12. A clash between Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) erupted Tuesday around 7:45 a.m in Jaffna lagoon near Ko’lumpuththu’rai when SLA troops in the sentry posts along the lagoon shore attacked LTTE boats, sources in Jaffna said. A law has come into force in India changing the name of the federal territory of Pondicherry - which will now be called Puducherry. Officials say the move is to reflect the indigenous history of the region. Puducherry, which means "new village", was the original Tamil name before it was changed by the French. It was a French colony for more than 200 years, becoming part of the modern Indian state in 1963, 16 years after India's independence.
