  3. By the time the morning sun had crept above the city’s Soviet-era apartment blocks, the crowd-control barriers lining Suvorov Square in downtown Tiraspol were already three-deep with families dressed in their Sunday (in this case, Monday) best. Their collective excitement was almost palpable on this surprisingly warm September day; anyone would have thought a royal wedding was on the cards. But in Transnistria (also spelled Trans-Dniester), a sliver of land tracing Moldova’s border with Ukraine for 400km, the capital’s Independence Day celebrations are the highlight of the year. Never mind that the tiny Eastern European nation, formally called the Pridnestrovian Mold…

But what we’re seeing in the growing rivalry between the two countries isn’t based on ideological difference but on inter-capitalist competition. 5. ALMOST FOUR years ago, the Sri Lankan government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa won a decisive victory in a 26-year-long civil war with rebels from the island’s minority Tamil community. The cost was horrific: A United Nations investigation subsequently found that up to 40,000 civilians may have died in the government's final offensive. But the triumph made Mr. Rajapaksa a hero among the majority Sinhalese community and gave him an opportunity to modernize his country while healing its ethnic rift. Unfortunately, the president and his family — two brothers hold cabinet positions — have pursued just the opposite course. Having acquired a two-thirds parliamentary majorit…

  7. Tigers vow reprisals as Sri Lanka launches new strikes Wed Apr 26, 2006 9:36 AM GMT By Peter Apps COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's military launched new strikes on Tamil Tiger areas in the island's northeast on Wednesday, a day after a deadly suicide bomb attack blamed on rebels shattered an already fragile ceasefire. Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said the new strikes came after the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fired on naval patrol craft off the eastern port of Trincomalee for a second day. The Tigers said they would retaliate if the government continued the attacks, launched after a suspected suicide bomb in the capi…

  9. Who’s Still Buying Russian Fossil Fuels in 2023? After China and the EU bloc, India is the next-largest importer of Russian fossil fuels, having ramped up the amount of fossil fuels imported by more than 10x since before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, largely due to discounted Russian oil. Türkiye is the only other nation to have imported more than $10 billion worth of Russian fossil fuels in 2023, with every other country having imported fewer than $3 billion worth of fuels from Russia this year. Navigating the Crude Reality of Oil Exports …

  11. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa rejected British concerns Leaders of Commonwealth nations are to issue final statements at the end of a summit in Colombo overshadowed by a row over alleged human rights abuses. A call by British Prime Minister David Cameron for an independent inquiry into alleged war crimes was criticised by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mr Cameron left the summit in the Sri Lankan capital early. On the final day, leaders are expected to make joint statements on issues like debt management and climate change. Malta has been chosen to host the next summit, in 2015, says the BBC's James Robbins, in Colombo. Mauritius,…

  12. Terrorist list is policy with a dash of politics: Analysts Federal government adds IRFAN, but rejects Sri Lanka’s listing of two Canadian groups. Embassy File Photo Tamil protesters in April 2009 demand the Canadian government pressure Sri Lanka to end military action at the time. Canada’s terrorist list is grounded in an “intensive” bureaucratic process, but one that is political nonetheless, security analysts say. Canada’s listing of the International Relief Fund for the Afflicted and Needy, and rejection of Sri Lanka’s listing of two Canadian Tamil organizations as terrorist groups in the past few weeks, created a stir of controversy in Canada and …

"Back to war" [TamilNet, January 22, 2006 21:06 GMT] "Unlike Indonesia Sri Lanka has failed to usher in peace. Every opportunity for rapprochement has been squandered after the Tsunami...The Sri Lankan government and the LTTE are steeped in mutual suspicion and contempt and will not arrive at any resolution on their own. A new heavy weight mediator must join Norway's Herculean but waning peacemaking efforts, one whom both parties can respect as an honest broker," said an independent analysis appeared in the Sunday online edition of "The News" of Jang Group. Recognition of Regional parties Election commission has fixed certain condition for recognizing a new party as regional party. Vijaykanth party was unable to get recognition in this local body election because that party has only one MLA in the Assembly. Regional parties like MDMK and PMK have got recognition only after they have contested election as alliance with either DMK or ADMK. In this regard, the Election commission may amend the condition as a new party should satisfy the condition prescribed by the election commission by contesting the election as its own, without alliance with any major parties.

I am now promoting it to you because I like the idea and I want you to share in what I think will be an exciting new Internet concept. AGLOCO’s story is simple: Do you realize how valuable you are? Advertisers, search providers and online retailers are paying billions to reach you while you surf. How much of that money are you making? NONE! AGLOCO thinks you deserve a piece of the action. AGLOCO collects money from those companies on behalf of its members. (For example, Google currently pays AOL 10 cents for every Google search by an …

  17. by Stephanie Kirchgaessner, Financial Times November 26th, 2007 When New York City's Michael Bloomberg launched Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a nationwide campaign seeking to stop the flow of illicit weapons in cities and towns across America, he became a favourite verbal target of the National Rifle Association. To bring more muscle to its fight in Washington, the mayors' coalition in May hired lobbyists at Dewey Square Group. To succeed, Dewey Square would have to go head-to-head with the NRA's own veteran lobbyists at Ogilvy Government Relations, one of the most powerful and well-connected such operations in Washington. Although they are on opposite s…

As a result of the current coronavirus pandemic, most people have more discretionary time than they did a month ago. Large numbers have wound up in front of their television sets seeking not escapism, but rather pandemic-related films. The two most widely seen, thus far, have been relatively recent: Wolfgang Petersen's Outbreak (1995), in which Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo and Morgan Freeman confront an Ebola-like disease; and Ste…

Many people I have worked with since 2009 have moved onto different roles, however, it was great to catch up with those who still remain in Geneva. I was able to meet many new people and stakeholders who have a lifetime of work behind them, with inspiring stories of courage, conviction and success on key human rights issues and situations around the world. And as always, reconnecting with my colleagues and my many friends from around the world was always a delight. Despite its shortcomings, I have always felt that the UNHRC is a place where advocacy …

Mr Hague made the comments while attending the Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka UK Foreign Secretary William Hague has said he believes it is possible for the Sri Lankan government to establish a war crimes inquiry before March. It comes after PM David Cameron called on president Mahinda Rajapaksa to set up an independent inquiry into alleged war crimes - or face a UN probe. Sri Lanka's government has rejected Mr Cameron's call for an international probe. Mr Hague said that Britain would be pursuing the issue. He made the comments to the Colombo-based Sunday Times while attending the Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka. Mr Hague told the paper that it…

  22. The latest case in Australia has been blamed on the government’s treatment of Tamil asylum seekers. Leo Seemanpillai, 29, set himself on fire in Geelong, Victoria, after waiting for more than a year to hear whether he could stay in Australia. He died from his injuries, but Mr Seemanpillai was an organ donor and his death has benefited five Australians. Tamil Refugee Council convener Trevor Grant said he was certain that Mr Seemanpillai’s depression over his refugee application had led to his drastic action. “He knew he would probably be sent back to Sri Lanka ... despite the fact that he would probably be persecuted or taken to jail,” Mr Grant said. “All Tamils I kno…
