UK Maintains Travel Advice On Sri Lanka

The British Foreign Ministry has not removed the travel advice on Sri Lanka which states that the end of the military conflict in May 2009 has seen an upsurge of nationalism in Sri Lanka.

Last year the External Affairs Ministry in Sri Lanka had raised objections to the advice and urged the British government to amend the contents which speaks of an upsurge of nationalism in Sri Lanka following the war.

Updated in November, the travel advice also notes that detentions do occur in Sri Lanka, particularly of people of Tamil ethnicity.

Britain has a huge Tamil Diaspora, mostly Sri Lankans who visit the island to meet their relatives and travel to their hometowns.

“Travellers should note that the end of the military conflict in May 2009 has seen an upsurge of nationalism in Sri Lanka. As a result, anti-Western (particularly anti-British) rhetoric has increased. This has led to violent protests against the British High Commission and other diplomatic premises. Although no protests have so far been directed at the British community more generally, you should be vigilant and avoid demonstrations,” the travel advice says. (ER)

Avoid traveling on Sri Lankan airways - your money might be used to torture Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
