ULFA forging ties with LTTE, say police

By ANI

Saturday December 2, 03:11 PM

Agartala (Tripura), Dec. 2 (ANI): Police officials in Tripura have claimed that connections exist between the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). "You are correct when you say that ULFA has links with LTTE. We have very definite evidence in Lakhipathar camp of ULFA. There were three LTTE men who had come and stayed for more than a month to organise certain camps, to advise them," Ghansyam Murari Srivastava, Director General of Police, Tripura, told reporters here. Prasad said ULFA's interest in maintaining contact with the LTTE was aimed at harnessing the latter's naval capabilities. "LTTE channel has been utilised by the ULFA for maritime contacts, sea routes, because ULFA also owns a few trawlers operating from Chittagong and it connects them right up to Cambodia. And this is the route LTTE also has taken for collecting the weapons. Basically, this maritime connection is for weapons, for movement of it," he said. Srivastava said the ULFA has emerged of late as the main militant outfit of the region, with two factions of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Manipur (NSCM) busy fighting among themselves. The ULFA now also plays the role of a coordinator between various rebel groups in the region, often organising meetings in neighbouring Bangladesh, he added. In September, a ceasefire with ULFA was called off by the Centre and armed operations against it were resumed. ULFA leaders, sympathizers and various leaders from Assam have since then sent several representations to New Delhi to convince it to restart talks. ULFA has been fighting a war of secession in oil and timber-rich Assam since 1979. It accuses New Delhi of neglecting the state and exploiting its natural resources. About 15,000 people have been killed in the insurgency so far. On the other hand, the LTTE has led a 23-year old ethnic civil war for a separate homeland for Tamils in Sri Lanka, in which 67,000 people have died so far. (ANI)
