Attacker's mobile says many stories

(LeN-2006 Dec 03, 4.30pm) An investigation CID team of Gotabhaya incident found that the guerilla who is suspected of driving the explosive laden three-wheeler wore a hands free kit. It was connected to an expensive Motorola mobile phone. The phone was found intact at the scene of the incident. The attacker's body laid a top a double cab sans his head and one arm.

They found that the owner of the phone was a resident in Wennappuwa. However, calls from the telephone all been between the attacker and someone in Vavuniya. Detectives beleave a handler in Vavuniya was giving instruction to the attacker. All others monitering Gotabhya's movements were reporting to this handler who inturn gave orders to the attacker. That way the LTTE had made sure the identities of those monitering the Defense Secretary's movements would not be revealed.

Tigers leave `clue` to mislead Lankan investigators

Investigation into the assassination bid on Sri Lanka`s Defence Secretary and President Mahinda Rajapakse`s brother Gotabhaya has been complicated by a number of `clues` left behind by the LTTE attacker in an apparent attempt to mislead.

The identity card of a man wanted in the April suicide bombing against the army chief was found at Friday`s bomb blast scene, an investigator said here today.

`It is obvious that they are trying to mislead the authorities,` he said.

The probe has revealed that the man who detonated his explosives-laden autorickshaw against the convoy of the Defence Secretary, had bought the vehicle a week earlier posing as a Muslim trader.

However, an autopsy showed that the suicide bomber was not circumcised and therefore could not be a Muslim, the investigator said.

The bomber`s phone was found and calls made to it have been traced to Vavuniya, piling on more problem for authorities since the northern town was rebel-held territory.

However, police detained two people who owned the three-wheel taxi used in the bombing that killed two army guards of Rajapakse and wounded 14 others.

Forensic experts have found that the three-wheeler was fitted with eight to 10 kg. of plastic explosives and packed with ball bearings which acted as pellets.

Gotabhaya narrowly escaped death as his bullet-proof BMW was also hit but protected the passengers.
