Sri Lanka air raids 'kill 15 civilians'

Tuesday Jan 2 19:43 AEDT

Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels said that 15 civilians, including four children, were killed in air strikes by government forces in the northwest of the island on Tuesday.

The military confirmed the strikes, but did not comment on casualties. They said a Sea Tiger base in Mannar and another rebel position in the eastern area of Vakarai were targeted.

A Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) military spokesman said four fighter jets conducted the strikes, destroying dozens of civilian houses in Mannar. "There are 15 dead bodies and 25 wounded from the bombing," added R Ilannthirayan.

 The LTTE, has repeatedly accused the government of targeting Tamil civilians in areas under their control, but the government says the rebels are using civilians as human shields.

Fighting between the Sri Lankan military and Tamil Tigers has escalated in recent weeks with the government vowing to dislodge the rebels from their eastern stronghold.

More than 3,000 people were killed last year in suicide bombings, air and naval raids and classes
