Sri Lankan Armed Forces, paramilitaries are responsible for all the killings and the abductions

-LTTE Spokesperson for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs

Armed forces of the Government of Sri Lanka and its allied paramilitaries are continuing to target civilians including government servants and school students.

Killings and abductions are continuing in the Jaffna peninsula and no one appears to be concerned about it. Twelve civilians including two government servants and two school students were killed within the last 12 days by the SLA and its paramilitary groups in Jaffna. A further eight civilians have been abducted and ten have sought protection from the Jaffna Human Rights Commission. Many of those killed and disappeared, either have been previously ordered to the SLA camps for inquiry or had their identity cards taken away by the SLA. Civilians are being threatened at gun point to not report these abductions.

SLA crushes any voices that try to expose these extra judicial killings and other human rights violations by the SLA and its paramilitaries. A very good example for how the SLA is controlling the people is the meeting that was held by the Jaffna military Commander Chandrasiri with NGOs and civil society representatives. At this meeting, the SLA Jaffna Military commander had instructed the NGOs and civil society representatives "not to refer to human rights issues and to restrict themselves to issues of humanitarian assistance," when they meet with the United Nations Under Secretary General, Humanitarian Affairs Mr. John Holmes.

The closure of the A-9 road resulted in the Jaffna civilians being trapped by the SLA and the SLA making it as an open prison. The unnoticed and unaddressed killings, abductions and all other forms of human rights violations by the armed forces of the Government of Sri Lanka is slowly converting Jaffna into an eerie graveyard.

While on the one hand civilians suffer due to lack of food, medicine and economic restrictions, on the other hand they are in permanent fear for their lives. Sri Lankan Armed Forces and its paramilitaries are responsible for all the killings and abductions in Jaffna. The international community should pay attention to the mass sufferings of the Tamil people in the hands of the Sri Lankan military. Jaffna military commander Chandrasiri and the members of the Sri Lankan armed forces who are responsible for these grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian laws should be brought to the international criminal justice system.
