Mervin the second, Duminda Disanayaka assaults Petroleum Corporation workers

(Lanka-e-News, 2008 April 03, 6.20 PM) The Deputy Minister of Petroleum Resources Development Duminda Disanayaka rushed into the head office of the Petroleum Corporation this morning (03), scolded the Deputy Financial Manager and took away her office telephone.

The Deputy Minister made this havoc since the Petroleum Corporation refused to pay a telephone bill of Rs. 500,000 for the use of his and his staff.

Petroleum Corporation General Workers' Union Chairman Lakshman Ananda said that the Deputy Minister had beaten the Deputy Financial Manager. The workers walked out today morning in protest of the Deputy Minister's action. Mr. Lakshman Ananda said that the intimidations by Ministers against the workers had become a fashion. He equated the incident to Minister Mervin Silva's atrocities at Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation premises.

The workers' union had informed the Deputy Minister's act of violence to the President who had instructed to initiate legal action against the relevant individuals.

The unions are to discuss the matter with the Minister of Petroleum Resources A.H.M. Fowsie tomorrow. They said that a trade union action would follow if redress were not granted.

The Chairman of the Petroleum Corporation Asantha de Mel said that the Corporation could not pay such expenses the Deputy Minister claimed.

The photos depict the workers walking out and the security forces strengthening security.
