Sri Lanka does not deserve status of a "state" - it is a terrorist state!

Any corner stone of democracy is media freedom. And in Sri Lanka among many others, it has long dead.

Take for example Sri Lankan journalist and editor Lasantha Wickrematunge, who was assassinated on 8 January this year by Sri Lankan state. Now, he has been named as the laureate of the 2009 World Press Freedom Prize by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In 1994, he started the Sunday Leader with his brother and used the publication to campaign vigorously against the war between the Sri Lankan army and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

In 2000, Mr. Wickrematunge secured a court victory which led to the abolition of the law that allowed the Government to curb the media. In November 2007, the Sunday Leader was damaged in an arson attack that Mr. Wickrematunge said resembled a commando action.

He expected to be assassinated and went so far as to write an editorial for publication after his death. In the editorial, which appeared in the Sunday Leader three days after he had been murdered, Mr Wickrematunge voiced his commitment and readiness to die for press freedom: " there is a calling that is yet above high office, fame, lucre and security. It is the call of conscience."

There are many other stories of journalists who had also been killed. Now, other have gone either in hiding or left the country.

It is time international community isolated Sri Lanka!!

Sri Lanka is a big time violator of universal human rights. It is a leader in the following and a disgusted member of UN:

It has ejected successfuly IIGEP who came to Sri Lanka to investigate some high profile murders, including of 5 Tamil students in Trincomalee and 17 aid workers of ACF, French NGO.

Sri Lanka is a leader, in the top three, where it abducts and kills Tamils all over the island. Now, it has started to not to register cases upon arrest, and the youth simply go dissapperaed.

Sri Lanka always rejected the call from UN for a permanent human rights monitoring mission. Yet, it wants all the benefits as a member state!

Recently, Sri Lanka has bombed hospitals, earlier schools - and all these have resulted to be listed as "war crimes" by UN. The international community must investigate into these crimes and bring those responsible to International Criminal Court.

Sri Lanka has been using food, medicine as weapons of war and these cases have all been well documented.

It is time the world apply sanctions against Sri Lanka until there are meaningful humanrights!
