It appears from what is going on re an independent investigation of GoSL atrocities against IDPs, we, Tamils, would have to take our campaign to a much higher level, and the one organisation that can help us do this is AVAAZ (www.avaaz.org). Avaaz achieved major successes in its campaigns recently against the government / bureaucracy in Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Zimbabwe, etc by bringing about worlwide outcry through online petitions signed by hundreds of thousands of its over 6.6 million members. The petition to China was signed by more than 1.5 million: the first million was reached in 7 days. They have members in 193 countries and carry out the campaigns in 13 languages.

Please find below a slightly improved version of an appeal I sent to Avaaz on 16 November. I am yet to get a response. May be Avaaz needs to be canvassed to take on our campaign, so please send in your appeals to Avaaz (go to www.avaaz.org ; click on 'Contact Us' and on 'New Campaign'; then enter your appeal in brief and also put your name and email address at the end).

"An appalling injustice was perpetrated by individuals and agencies of Sri Lankan Government (GoSL) against a section of its own citizens in 2009. GoSL military annihilated LTTE rebels in May 2009 by using indiscriminate aerial bombing and heavy weapons, thus ending the protracted civil war. During the last five months of the war, 40,000 Tamil civilians were killed and 100,000 more were severely injured and traumatised inside the Govt established no-fire zone which was bombed and shelled as well; the high death toll is partly due to the Govt imposed severe restriction of food supply and medical aid to the war zone and destruction of hospitals / medical facilities therein, in spite of protests by WFP and ICRC. GoSL has, however, denied bombing, using heavy weapons or killing a single civilian. Atrocious lies.

Several rights advocacy groups in the country and abroad (AI, HRW, etc) and some of the major international media (Channel 4 TV in UK, New York Times, CNN, etc) have irrefutable evidences of gross violations of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Laws and have called for an independent, international investigation. You could view their statements / reports online.

However, GoSL has, with the help of China and Russia, thwarted repeated attempts to even discuss this matter in the UN Security Council. Instead, it has set up its own commission of inquiry with a severely limited mandate which has been deemed unacceptable by international humanitarian organisations. Further, there is no witness protection, and the few who gave evidence to this commission have been persecuted.

A massive public outcry worldwide is now needed to take the case to the UN General Assembly and bring about an international investigation covering all parties to the war. As a supporter of Avaaz for more than 5 years, I believe only Avaaz, with over 6.6 million members spread over in 193 countries and impressive campaign successes, can make this outcry happen, and help to bring about a true accountability in Sri Lanka. Only then a lasting reconciliation of all the indigenous ethnic and religious groups in this island can be achieved."
