தமிழனப் படுகொலை ஈராண்டு நிறைவு: போர்க்குற்றங்கள் குறித்து ஐ.நா விசாரிக்க வேண்டும்!

வன்னியில் இடம்பெற்ற இறுதிக் கட்டப் போரின் போது மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட போர்க்குற்றங்கள் மற்றும் மனிதவுரிமை மீறல்கள் தொடாபில் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபை விசாரணைகளை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என சர்வதேச மன்னிப்புச் சபை மீண்டும் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளது.

முள்ளிவாய்க்கால் பேரவலத்தின் ஈராண்டு நிறைவடையும் நிலையில் சர்வதேச மன்னிப்புச் சபையின் இலங்கை விவகாரங்கள் தொடர்பிலான ஆய்வாளர் யூலன்டா பொஸ்டர் இக் கோரிக்கையை முன்வைத்துள்ளார்.

போர் எவ்வுளவு கொடுமையானது என்பதற்கு ஆன்னி பிராங்கின் நாட்குறிப்பின் சில குறிப்புக்களை சுட்டிக்காட்டிய அவர், வன்னிப் போரின் போது பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு நீதியும், நியாயமும் கிடைப்பதற்கு வழிசெய்யப்பட வேண்டும் என கோரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளார்.

வன்னியில் இடம்பெற்ற இறுதிக் கட்டப் போரின் போது மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட போர்க்குற்றங்கள் மற்றும் மனிதவுரிமை மீறல்கள் தொடாபில் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபை நிபுணர்கள் குழுவின் அறிக்கை ஆதாரங்களுடன் பட்டியலிட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால், இப் போரின் போது பொது மக்கள் எவரும் படைத்தரப்பால் கொல்லப்படவில்லை என சிறிலங்கா அரசாங்கம் தொடர்ச்சியாக கூறிவருகின்றது.

இப் போரில் உயிரிழந்தவர்களை நினைவு கூருவதற்கும், சிறிலங்கா அரசாங்கம் அளுமதி அளிப்பதில்லை. அத்துடன், போரின் போது உயரிழந்த பலருக்கு இதுவரை மரண அத்தாட்சிப் பத்திரங்களும் வழங்கப்படவில்லை. எனவே, வன்னிப் போரின் போது மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட போர்க்குற்றங்களை உதாசீனம் செய்யாமல், அது குறித்த சர்வதேச விசாரணைகளை ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபை முன்னெடுக்க வேண்டும் என அவர் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளார்.

ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபை நிபுணர்கள் குழுவின் அறிக்கையை சிறிலங்கா அரசாங்கம் மிகச் சாதாரணமாக நிராகரித்துள்ளது. ஆனால், உண்மைகள் என்பதை ஒருபோதும் குழிதோண்டிப் புதைக்க முடியாது. எனவே, உண்மையின் போரால், நீதியின் பேரால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு நீதி கிடைப்பதற்கு ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபையும், சர்வதேச சமூகமும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என அவர் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளார்.

Sri Lanka: Survivors appeal for justice two years on

One of the things that shocked me most about the final months of the war was the way in which hospitals were repeatedly and systematically attacked. The shelling of the main hospital in the town of Puthukkudiyiruppu on 4 February 2009 was just one example of the way in which civilians were targeted and killed. The hospital, which had been subjected to several attacks in previous days, was bombarded by shelling for 16 hours.

In this period, I started to read biographies of other survivors of war seeking to understand how they sustained themselves. I found inspiration in The Diary of Ann Frank and did something I haven’t done since I was a teenager – wrote out a passage from her book and stuck it on my bedroom mirror.

On 8th July 1944 Ann writes:

“It’s really a wonder that I haven’t dropped my ideals because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet, I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death”.

This January, I met a teenage survivor from the war who had also turned to The Diary of Ann Frank for solace. She showed me the passage she had highlighted, an entry from 6th July 1944. It reads:

“It doesn’t matter (what) keeps people on the right path. It isn’t the fear of God but the upholding of one’s own honour and conscience”.

The young woman appealed to me and Amnesty International to stand by our principles of truth and justice and continue our call for an international investigation into what happened in those final months of the war.

The government’s response to the UN’s new report into the crimes committed two years ago has been to simply reject it outright. But the need for truth has never been stronger. Despite attempts to bury the truth there are credible reports that both sides committed gross abuses of human rights and international humanitarian law, including war crimes.

The UN must open an international investigation now to honour the survivors and the dead.

As we mark the end of many months of agony that ended two years ago to this date, we all have our work cut out. Sri Lanka continues to successfully hoodwink international community to this day. It also avoids any meaningful action on abundantly clear crimes against humanity. But, thanks to people like you we have high hope that justice will be served.

We owe justice to victims and more importantly to those who left to live deserve justice, closer and dignity.
