Gillard to meet Sri Lankan president

Prime Minister Julia Gillard will meet Sri Lanka's president on Wednesday night to discuss claims of human rights abuses in the country.

Ms Gillard and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa are in Perth for the Commonwealth Heads Of Government meeting (CHOGM), but Mr Rajapaksa has been surrounded by controversy since his arrival in Australia.

On Tuesday, a court action was filed by a Sri Lankan-born Australian man in Melbourne, accusing Mr Rajapaksa of war crimes, but federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland did not allow it to proceed.

Ms Gillard has previously said the Australian government is concerned about war crimes claims, but she has refused to comment further on the matter.

"Clearly, the courteous thing for me to do is to have the discussion with him first rather than publicly canvas matters which may be raised in that discussion before I have it," she told reporters in Perth on Wednesday.

"But I have been clear about Australia's position in relation to allegations of human rights abuse in Sri Lanka. We believe that this is a serious question."

Ms Gillard said there were no plans to boycott the next CHOGM in 2013, which will be hosted by Sri Lanka.
