A human race in the verge of extinction. Can we stop the devastation of our motherland and save our own species? Priya Raj, 25th January 2007. Death, mayhem, rape, molestation, psychological trauma, malnutrition, displacement and disappearances in the Tamil nation are slowly but steadily pushing the native Tamil race towards extinction. Every second that passes by in the north and east of Sri Lanka confirms this horrific fact and unfolding a story that is beyond the civilized world’s wildest imagination. Of all the species that have lived on the Earth since life first appeared here 3 billion years ago, only about one in a thousand is still livi…

Fortunately, we took precautions against this, and our successful completion of the Heroes day program, inspite of Colombo violating international laws bombing our facility, is a testimony to the resilience of our staff,” said Thamizhanpan, director of Voice of Tigers, LTTE’s official broadcasting corporation, in an interview with a Australian Tamil Broadcasting Corporat…

It is six months since the end of the conflict in Sri Lanka but Tamil Tiger rebels and their supporters are yet to recover from the dramatic military defeat by security forces earlier this year. The recent attempts by remnants of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) abroad to revive the movement have not succeeded so far. Now questions are being raised over the future of its international network and millions of dollars worth of assets spread across continents. It is a dramatic reversal of fortune for the LTTE, once described as one of the most powerful guerrilla movements in the world which almost had a de facto state and its own naval and air wings…

Tigers eye Jaffna city Bull's Eye by a Special Defence Correspondent In the backdrop of increasing attacks on the security forces in the North, orders were given to the security forces to act in self defence. This has developed to a volatile situation with tension and panic being the order of the day in the peninsular. Constant cordon and search operations have perturbed the LTTE sympathisers who harbour the Tigers that plan attacks. Many such families have left for Tiger held Kilinochchi to avoid security checks. Are these sympathizers offended by the constant security checks or does their leaving herald any possible LTTE offensive against the Governmen…

Murugan Worship in Sri Lanka: New Archaeological Evidence Recent archaeological findings underscore the fact that the traditional history of the Sri Lankan Tamils should be reviewed. I consider that these archaeological findings and the pertaining new perspective on them are of significance in two respects. Firstly, though the tradition of employing archaeological evidences in historical studies is in effect for a long time in Sri Lanka, there has been a tendency to associate the archaeological emblems pertaining to Tamils with the Tamils from Tamil Nadu who used visit Sri Lanka then and on rather than relating them with the Tamils living in Sri Lanka. Th…

Why do Hindus Worship Bell? I have already written about Hindus’ worship of Cows (Go Puja), Elephants (Gaja Puja), Snakes (Naga Panchami), Scorpions, Sandals (Paduka Puja), Fossils (Salagrama Puja), Gem Stones(Spatika/crystal), Conches (Shanka Puja) and flowers (Pushpanchali). I have also written that the calling bell was invented by the Hindus in my post ‘’Hindus invented the Calling Bell’’. Now I give some details about Bell Puja! Yes, Hindus worship bells as well. You know the story of Manu Neethi Choza who followed Manu Dharma Shastra during his rule. When the palace bell was rung by the cow which lost its calf under the wheels of his son’s chariot he killed his…

A turning point in the drift to war Unanswered questions remain about the killing of Sri Lankan foreign minister By K. Ratnayake 23 May 2006 With the eruption of open fighting between the Sri Lankan military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), it is timely to reexamine a key turning point in the slide towards renewed civil war—the assassination of former Sri Lankan foreign minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar, by unidentified gunmen on the night of August 12 last year. The murder was a political boon for the Sinhala extremists of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), who had been agitating unsuccessfully against a joint…

Sri Lanka’s 30-year war would be remembered, in part, for the crucial role played by Norway. The Norwegians managed to secure peace talks between the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) and the LTTE and the peace process continued for a number of years under successive Governments. Though Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim mediated between the GoSL and the LTTE under three Sri Lankan leaders, in the end attempts made by him and many others to ensure that the peace process continued failed. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mirror online, Solheim revealed details of some of his discussions with the rebels and the GoSL as well as the role played by the inte…

Life in embattled Batticaloa PK Balachandran Batticaloa (Eastern Sri Lanka), April 1, 2007 Batticaloa district in 2007 has acquired a reputation which it did not have in the last 25 years of the military conflict in North East Sri Lanka. This relatively peaceful Eastern Sri Lankan district has become a very dangerous place to visit, making even seasoned journalists wonder if it is safe. The reason is the change in weaponry and tactics used in the conflict. There is now an overwhelming reliance on long distance fighting with artillery, 'arty' mortars, Multi-Barrel Rocket Launchers (MBRL) and jet fighter bombers. And the shelling from the gro…

Space Shuttle Atlantis has launched from the Kennedy Space Center. Senior NASA officials spoke glowingly of the shuttle Atlantis' performance late Friday after the orbiter shot into space this evening without any significant hiccups. "We had a very good countdown and launch," said NASA associate administrator Rex Geveden in a post-launch news conference. "The space shuttle Atlantis is safely in orbit for the STS-117 mission." Atlantis lifted off from Pad 39A here at NASA's seaside Kennedy Space Center at 7:38:04 p.m. EDT (2338:04 GMT), rising on a sinuous cloud of expanding smoke in a blue sky still illuminated by sunlight. Discipline, death and martyrdom By Dumeetha Luthra BBC News, Trincomalee The Tigers are renowned for their discipline It is a small glass vial, no longer than a cigarette, and it is worn with a little black string as a pendant. It could almost be a fashion accessory if it were not for the white powder inside - a fatal dose of cyanide. Nothing symbolises the Tamil Tigers and their culture of death and martyrdom quite so succinctly. Every rebel wears it when on duty. Death is better than capture. Maraivendan describes exactly how it is taken. "We need to bite into the glass so that it will cut the skin on …

Will The LTTE make an air Strike on Colombo? by B. Raman (The LTTE has still much bite left in it as seen by the rapidity and deadly effectiveness with which it has hit back against the Sri Lankan Police, Army and Navy after each incident of reprisal killing by the Government in which their hand is suspected……After the spectacular assassination of Laxman Kadirgamar, the then Foreign Minister, last year, the LTTE has not been able to mount any other spectacular strike in Colombo. Most of its post-November,2005, terrorist strikes have been confined to the Northern and Eastern provinces. Is it due to operational weaknesses on the ground in Colombo or due to fears o…
