Thousands of people took part in Heroes Day amidst SL military intelligence trying to ‘discipline’ the students and the people from not attending the memorial event on Wednesday. The people were determined to proceed with the event despite showering heavy rains at the grounds where Tamil war heroes (Maaveerar) lie buried in the occupied Tamil Eelam. Self-mobilised grassroots organised the remembrance events. Alternative locations were chosen for the war cemeteries (thuyilum-illam) grounds, which the occupying SL military was continuing to use, in an uncivilised manner, as the grounds for their cantonments. Sinhala soldiers were seen snatching the photos from the parents w…

Douglas loses heavyweight Munza Mushtaq in Colombo, February 1, 2006, 10.51 p.m.. In what appeared to be one of the most surprising splits, K. Vigneswaran, a former parliamentarian and advisor to Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) Leader Douglas Devananda has resigned from the party owing to the 'authoritative and dictatorial attitude' adopted by the EPDP leader. Dr. Vigneswaran who was with the EPDP for more than ten years was also Devananda's chief advisor and main negotiator of the EPDP when the draft constitution was being drawn up, and obviously Vigneswaran's resignation is a huge blow 'resource' wise to the EPDP leader, sources pointed out. Indian and Eelam Tamils are Hindu terrorists: Musharraf. [ Gjd;fpoik, 27 bnrk;gH 2006 ] [ fpU;zg;gps;is ] Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf says he is against use of the term Islamist terrorists or "Islamo-fascists" as such labelling can then be used for other terrorist outfits as well, like the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka who are Hindus. "Does one call terrorists in Sri Lanka Hindu terrorists? Why is Pakistan's bomb called an Islamist bomb? Why is India's bomb not called a Hindu bomb and that of Israel as a Jewish bomb?" Musharraf asked. "Pakistani people are certainly for fighting terrorism, but they somehow are not happy with relations with the United S…

No one knows how many thousands of people died in Sri Lanka in 2009, the year that marked the end of a decades-long struggle between the Sri Lankan government and the secessionist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (known more commonly as the Tamil Tigers). Certainly, it was one of the bloodier conflicts that the world has witnessed in recent decades. But no one outside Sri Lanka really seems to care. After years of bitter conflict between the two sides, one that witnessed the inaugural use of the suicide belt in the 1980s, the Sri Lankan government launched a no-holds-barred offensive against the Tigers in the latter years of the last decade, resulting in enormous carn…
